There is a shelbyville right next to that one... hmmm. I always believed it was Illinois's Springfield.
I love the Simpsons, and have argued the whereabouts of springfield before. It has no deffinate location. It you watch it, they never say a state. Reason being, they are no longer limited. Almost every state it seems has a Springfield, it is like a main Street or something! But seriously, think about it. They live within a few miles of the beach, driving distance to Florida, driving distance to mountains with Skiing slopes, they have massive mountains (Homer climbed the MurderHorn). They live les than a day's drive away from the 4 corners. They have swealtering hot tripple digit heatwaves, and freezing cold sub-zero winters. By not mentioning their specific location, they leave themselves open to a lot more episodes and stuff because they don't have a specific terrain or climate to work around... Come to think of it, Springfield was on the ocean, because they showed a lot of beach front on the "Eye On Springfield" type show they have, but they also have lakes and redwoods! And farms too... I know there is more, but I can't remember... Did they ever have a Desert? I keep thinking they do, but I can't remember specific episodes, unlike all the others.

no its springfield oregon. Mat Groening is an alumni of UofO Eugene and they LITERALLY have the statue on campus that is refered to as Jerimiah Springfield on thier campus ( called pioneer man) and if you peruse the city of springfield oregon you will find wiggums road, milhouse street...etc....
no shit I never knew this I thought the whole thing was that no one knew where it was suppose to really be.
While I don't doubt the information presented, I don't think it's springfield oregon. I'd say that may have been his inspiration for many parts of the show, but it doesn't fit all of the location references made throughout the history of the cartoon. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be ambiguous, but Groening has obviously drawn from personal experience in many aspects of shaping springfield.
