i recently aquired a set of runes, burned onto wood from a black locust tree that was felled during a storm at a pagan festival (according to the vendor i bartered with.) does anyone here use the runes? any pointers for a beginner? i like their energy so far.

Runes were hard for me when I first started using them until my aunt taught me this. Pull one rune out of the bag each morning. Concentrate on its synbol and its meaning, even if you have to look it up,then put it on your altar. Throughout the day think of the symbol and meaning as you go about your daily chores, job, whatever. Chances are sometime during the day something will apply to the drawn rune. When you go to bed concentrate on it again.
The next day put it back in the bag and draw another, do the same as yesterday. If you should happen to draw the same rune as before just concentrate on its meaning and pull another.

thanks. i actually used to use runes about 12 years ago, but it's been so long i really consider myself a beginner. although there are some runes, like wunjo, that are so special to me i'll never forget their meaning.

You can make then fron just about anything. I have a set I made using those flat glass rocks you put in the bottom of a fish tank. You can get a bag of those for less than two dollars and put the symbols on them with a paint pen, then spray them with a clear laquer. I also have a set I made using different colored rocks.
You can get small flat tiles of wood and either paint them on it or use a woodburning tool.

I used to have a set of runes I bought at the store, but I've lost a few... so I made my own set using some terra cotta clay and blue paint, they actually look rather cool!
