I remember when cokes were ten cents, and you had to pull them from the top of the machine.

When I was a kid, Coke used to taste different. Is it for real, or is it just my imagination?

I loved Tab! Bring back cyclamates! How could "just one calorie taste that way?"

I have a pack of new Tab sitting in my fridge. I had to try it out. Alas it's not the same, just one of those energy drinks. But it's not bad.

I don't drink Coke, and rarely drink soda. They're all way too sweet!

No, Buff, it's not your imagination. The original formula (sans cocaine) used an acid that is found in muscle tissue: the one that is excreted to let you know that you are feeling the burn. The new original formula dropped that.

i rember those kind of soda coolers. they were like a horizontal freezer only just a cooler. and the tops stuck up through these kind of chanels. and you had to slide the one you wanted from the chanel you wanted to this kind of cross chanel where they all came togather and then into this kind of space that had kind of like a little door on top of it and then you had to drop a coin in the coin slot and that would unlock the little door that you still had to lifit the bottle through by hand, and the little door was kind of heavy and it was all metal, and sometimes it was hard to pull it out and if your hand slipped and let the little door relock itself before you could get the bottle out you had to put another coin in to unlock it again. and if you complained about that happining and the owner knew you and believed you they'd come out and had some kind of a slug they would drop in the coin slot so you could get it.

i think those were some of the earliest machines. i remember the next era that were kind of like a stand up refrigerator, all rounded, 50s style, that has some kind of door or something along the side, and like the horizontal ones, you had to reach in and pull, coordinated with putting the coin in. and there was a kind of lever arraingement if you chainged your mind and wanted a refund.

i remember the alternatives to coke being squirt and 7-up and hires root beer, and i think there may have been some kind of carbonated orange.

in the restaurants where they had the valves you could get a carbonated lemon lime. that was what i liked to have with my tuna sandwedge, that always came with pickle AND chips or choice of potatoe or macaroni salid. the tuna sandwedge was 45 cents with all of that except the drink. a hamburger with everything on it was 55. an egg salad samitch was 35, and a hot roast beaf and gravey with mashed potatoes and a vegi was $1.05. coffee was $.10 and so was a candy bar.

    =^^=

I was going to add Coca-Cola to this forum until I saw this thread.
One thing I've noticed, or it could just be me, is that today it tastes
different from when I was young. Years ago it tasted stronger but
today it's fairly weak tasting, perhaps my taste buds or going but
I'm convinced that the coke taste has been reduced.

Hey Skip--a few years back I was sitting in the back yard of a customer in Florida, taking a break and she asked if I wanted a soda."Sure and thanks" I said.I didn't notice what she brought as I was blabbing to my employee and I took a big swig of-----------------TAB!I involuntarily spat it on the ground and had to act like it went down the wrong hole! That stuff tasted rank as hell.Funny how one person can REALLY like something and another can REALLY hate it!AS for me,I hope I never see another can of that particular liquid in my entire life of america!

Speaking of the 'Coke' a Cola back in fifties & sixties...
You pour some in a glass
Drop in a piece of bread
    Watch it go 'poof'
Yup that was the only pop my mom an I liked ...hmm
So many were addicted to this drink....gee wonder why....coughs'

Oh an don't forget that ole ' good 'cough surup'
Both of these soon left the markets
And we trusted them then ........hmmm
    And what about now...?????

    Speaking again of Coke:

I've seen a demonstration where a bone was soaked in Coke over night. The next day, the bone was tied in a knot as if a piece of rope. Then of course, many people still use Coke to wash grease and oil from their windshield.

If you got a coke at a soda fountain it was made by mixing the syrup with the soda water and came in a coke glass, or you got a metal stand that held a paper cone like a coffee filter, which held the coke.
A cherry coke had coke syrup mixed with cherry syrup.

A coke bottle was almost industructable. we used to throw them againest concrete and watch them bounce.

You got 2 cents if you returned the bottle.

We used to buy a coke for a dime and a bag of M&Ms for a nickle and dump the M&Ms into the coke bottle. They'd fizz up until the candy coating desolved then you had a chocolet coke.

    Which reminds me of Fizzies.

I think they should bring Coke back in those glass bottes... I think that looks great.
