You cant expect it to be something you can live off constantly from the very start. The old joke of "how do you make a million dollars as a musician? start with two million dollars...." hits pretty close to home. Even big name musicians dont make as much as one might think, and often have backup plans lined up for dry spells of gigs.

In order to make it work, you have to cut way down on your living expenses, keep busy getting new gigs and contacts, play as often as possible (sometimes for less money than one wants!) and give away alot of free Cds to bookers, venues, and the like. You gotta have a CD, and it takes money to make money.

All sounds damn cliche' and at times it really is. But when you get that box of your own music and make a few bucks with em, its a great feeling!
