There have been several threads talking about pierced/tattooed/dreaded people. What do you do to pay the bills? I need to look for a new job, but not sure who will hire me. My ears are heavily pierced and Ihave facial piercings (I usually only wear my little nose stud anyway) and I have dreadlocks. Hmm...help me out here.
Well, I'm a systems analyst. I have piercings, labret, tongue & a 00 gague ear tunnel & also have dreads & my bosses are cool with that I work on a *cough* Dell Repair line
I only have 1 tat and 2 piercings - fairy tat on my leg and my nose and lip are pierced I quit working at price chopper when I got lip done because they were gonna fire me anyway. But I haven’t worked in 5 months so I guess it doesn’t really matter now.
i have fought the evil demons here in the states for years when it comes to tats piercings n hair choices i have made,,, unfortunately here in the states its perfectly alright to judge ppl by such things and therefore is perfectly fine to discriminate as well.... many other places there are laws n shit to protect folks from such things and is much more acceptable in society itself... i spent most of my adult life on a large dairy farm in management type position,,,not to say they didnt question what i did over the years but they didnt care either,,, and it always made seminars n such alot more fun... i was original trained in nursing hahahaha,,, my choices in body mods made it difficult,,, i had to wear sleeves etc to cover any tats as they could be offensive... ( rainbow n balloon tats on arms...) i always figgered a music store or something of the sort would be acceptable to me n my choices but never had an opportunity,,,,.. construction areas seem to be pretty accessible as well once one proves themself,, if they can get the opportunity to do so.. self employment is good cuz you are your boss..n of course body mod industry is acceptable unfortunately my piercings also kept me from some pretty good jobs over the last couple years, i refuse to take some of them out... it isnt made real easy for folks like us out there in the big ugly world,,,, n it can be downright mean too.. good luck
I am studying towards being a teacher, I have fairly long dreads, a nose stud, and 2 earings in each ear. Not that much, except maybe the dreads. I had in all about 8 month of practicums in different schools, and nobody ever said anything anout anything
I'm studying to be a teacher too and I had a practicum and they didn't say anything to me. Actually I saw two teachers with phatty dreadies. I live in the USA. Dreads are accepted nowadays. What type of teacher are you going to be? I'm going to be an elementary/special ed teacher.
dreads are more acceptable than piercings and tats,,,, or rainbow colored hair would be,,, and sure in large cities way more acceptable than in small town america... rp... massage therapy, or something along those lines also tends to be fairly open to us oddities,,, of course alot of what is open to us without a problem requires the education behind as well,,, not something one can just jump into...
When I graduate in December I'll be a nurse. I don't have any facial piercings, although I'd like my eyebrow done I probably won't get it, just seems like a waste when I"ll have to remove it for work. My tattooes will be easily covered by my scrubs and a long sleeved lab jacket.
I'm a dance instructor. My dreads, piercings, and tattoos are part of my "creative outlet", as my boss likes to say. when I get out into the "real world" (I am an environmental studies major), I don't anticipate having too much of a problem...working with environmental non-profits isn't exactly a white collar job. LOL
I am going to be art and chemistry for secondary/college prep students. Then, art teachers are always allowed more then non-art teachers, also for the "creative-outlet" theory....
I have worked for lawyers for most of my working life, and at present I'm working for a property lawyer in a small family-run practice. It is in a city centre of a reasonably large city in the UK. I have a nose piercing but my stud is very small and discreet and has never been remarked on. I also tend to dye my hair various shades of red and purple, again never a raised eyebrow. It's not dreaded, I wouldn't want dreads but I have had braids before (I wasn't working then though) and I doubt that my bosses would object to me having braids. I tie my hair back though for work anyway, as it's fairly long. I have one tattoo at the moment, as it's on my belly going towards my hip, it's covered unless I'm wearing swimwear or low-slung stuff, which I never do for work anyway. I don't dress "officey" either, I usually have a hoodie and flared cords or my favourite velvet flares, and I wear clumpy platform boots most of the time. I have had issues with previous employers (which I have posted elsewhere, so I won't repeat them) but at the moment I am doing a job which I enjoy and I have the freedom to pretty much "be myself". I agree with others though, it is hard to balance doing a job/career and having body modifications. To me it's another form of prejudice, but to an employer, if they have two candidates with same experience/qualifications, then obviously they are going to hire the one who would seem to present the correct so-called image. Employers get to pick and choose, but for some people body modification is an expression of their spiritual or belief system (eg, a Rastafarian, not necessarily of black origin) and one could argue that descrimination against certain lifestyle choices is almost as bad as racial, sexual or sexual orientation discrimination. Sorry for ranting ... tis a subject that I feel most strongly about.
I am a writer so no one sees me in a customer care sort of way. In school for English/writing-enviornmental advocacy-political science. I worked as an intern for the state legislature and when i went to take my peircings out my legislator told me not to bother (she was a republican assigned by class). I am getting an office job now at a high end audio visual installation and purchasing company and they have no problem. i think it really has to do with the person in charge i.e. your boss.
im a massage therapist, not moded, but i have a shaved head, i wear dr martens boots in the clinic, my lon chain, and i wear dark clothes and dark make up. and i wear military style clothes and leather jackets in front of clients. if i got piercings, i dont think the perception people would have would change. i already looks "strange". i have to report ive never had any clients unhappy with my presentation. only thing my boss sed is im not allowed to wear ripped pants
i have my nose, labret and 3 holes in my left ear and 2 in my right.... right now i'm a cashier, and they don't allow anything but 3 studs max in your ears...it sucks. I'm going to college/uni to be a nurse for a few years, and then back to school to be a midwife....i don't know if i'll have to take them out.....i wear some very small, white studs in both my labret and my nose. I'm planning on getting a couple of tatoos soon.....but scrubs will cover them....i'm getting a vine down my calve and foot and my dh and i are getting matching ones of our daughter and any future kids to come......that's all that it planned for now.
