i saw this movie on sunday i thought it was fabulous a bit boring here and there, but overall just beautiful, the camera action was intriguing to watch, i really had a good time with this movie, barely took my eyes off the screen the only beef i hear some people have with the movie, is the accents of the actors/actresses and also the accuracy of how they depicted geishas i didn't even know what a geisha was though, let alone that they were prostitutes, i found out like a quarterway or halfway into the movie...haha =]
They weren't prostitutes. The book and the movie have been not taken seriously because of that. There was no "eel and cave" tradition thing anywhere, in Japan. Geishas were artists, dancers, musicians, hired to entertain. They could take a husband, if they wished, but they never sold their bodies. Prostisutes were completely different.
I really enjoyed this movie also. It was a little long for my short attention span but yeah it was pretty good.
Yep, the prostitutes were called courtesans. As for the film, haven't seen it. I have too many friends that I do not wish to offend by watching "Sayuri". If I wanna see a Geisha, I'll go to Kyoto.
I thought it kind of sucked. It was very beautifully made, but it had no soul. The book upon which the book was based was not perfect, but it had a spark. The book ignored most of the moments from the book that had spark or skewed them strangely.
What do you mean by "issues?" I thought Memoirs was a pure entertainment film. I certainly didn't think it had any earth-shattering political, social or cultural statements to make. It's really just a love story. I didn't think the movie did a very good job of telling the story, but I don't think it was trying to be about more.
No cultural issues?? HAHA absolute bollocks, you just have to read the title to know it's going to be based on culture and society. WTF do you think Geisha is exactly? Girls who like to dress up for fun? LMFAO
i thought it was really good. havent read the book yet though. book's always better than the movie...
I was referring to contemporary cultural issues. The Geisha culture no longer really exists in Japan, and the director was not using the historical material to make any statements about the state of the world today.
ive read the book, and giesha di sometimes have sex with the aristocratic men,and did pretty much sell their virginity, but they were'nt prostitutes.
