It's the same mindset that the Chinese have thinking tiger penises will cure impotence or the Japanese think that sharkfin soup makes a man more virile.

Freaky cultural practices. The problem is you can send all the money you want and sign all the petitions, people are gonna keep doing these things. I mean, we can't even get the Norwegians and Japanese to stop whaling despite international law, boycotts, and protests.

Excuse me. I never said I agreed with said cultural practices. I was simply stating that these practices are never likely to stop BECAUSE of the culture inwhich they exist.

In the Women's Issues forum we are discussing how hard it is to get certain cultures to stop FGM. We can't even get protection for women and children from maiming and killing, let alone for nonhuman animals. We are also debating as to whether or not it's even right to stop such cultural practices. While I do believe we should try to end barbaric cultural norms, I also have to stop and ask myself...who the hell am I?

Most animal advocates are white, middle-class, Americans. We don't know what it's like to have our own, and family's, survival resting on the sales of bear bile. Just like most of us have no idea what it's like live in a village so poor that the only marketable asset to our family is a virgin daughter and the only logical(in our desperation) way to preserve said virginity is to ensure that she'll NEVER want to have sex by removing her clitoris, labia, and sewing her shut. I don't agree with it, I think it underminds basic human rights HOWEVER, I've never been in that particular situation...so I can only speculate.

We don't know. We always assume that these people are exactly like us and they aren't. You can't just go around screaming.."will somebody think of the bears????"

The best way to help these bears(and the people!) is to find out why they do what they do and is there a feasible alternative that would provide the same support for their families and economy. Because until you do, this will not stop. The Japanese will keep whaling until you can convince all those whaling villages that there is a more humane way to subsidize their economy. Because honestly, they don't give a shit if you don't like it, they care about feeding their families and giving them all the stuff you enjoy on a daily basis.

Respect is a two-way street. You want respect as an animal advocate but you have to show respect in order to recieve it.

This is a fundemental problem with the current animal-rights movement. They think screaming in people's faces and dictating cultural practices as evil will get people to listen and respect the message.

It's doesn't, it just earns you a one-way ticket to Mocksville.

    *jumps off soapbox*

hmm.. well ill give the people money to live so they dont have to confine the bears..

its a tricky subject on all parts. But, even if the people who practise such inhumane things will know what theyre doing is wrong, how couldn't you? If theyr money situation is so desperate that they have to confine a bear in small cages and extract its bile whilst its starving, they can write me a letter and ill send them all the money i can so they can afford the bare esentials. im going to keep doing what i can, and if i die before i win my fight against animal cruelty, then at least i know i tried hard instead of turning away from it, i see your point though i really do.
How can we judge people when we havent been in the situation ourselves?
We dont, all i know is, IF i were in there position its what i wouldn't do in any circumstance, and thats all i can know. So im not going to sit and ponder wether doing it is right or wrong, we are all ultimatly the same people, with hearts, and we all know in our hearts putting animals, people, whatever through such suffering is wrong, despite what the chinese, japanese whomever might say. To some all it comes down too is their cashflow and those people are the greedy people, whom derserve theyre practises shut down without a second thought.

i hope what i said has made some sence
    peace out
