For free jazz, what about Art Ensemble of Chicago? Or for contemporary jazz, EST (from Norway) are just the best piano trio round at the moment - perhaps even the best band.
Free jazz has never been precisely defined but some people have mentioned some people/bands that are definitely not. The lines between some free jazz and avande-garde / third stream are very blurred or even some parts of songs contain parts of both but not all the time, so I could understand some confusion. You forgot: Archie Shepp
Wait, are we listing jazz musicians, or free-jazz musicians? If you're looking to get into some avant-garde stuff, check out Andrew Hill. He's not entirely free jazz, but his music is awesome and reminiscent of free jazz. Ornette Coleman is sort of the foundation of free jazz.
god daym people, list whatever you want! jazz is jazz. I only started this thread to spread the names of Don Cherry, Dyani, & Temiz anyway, and still not one person has even heard OF them.
Oh I've definitely heard of Don Cherry. I have some of his work with Ornette Coleman, it's great stuff.
Well, that is some pretty good stuff, but Im talking about late 60's early 70's, that is the best stuff ! You should check it out, I promise you wont be dissapointed, check out the live albums Orient and Blue Lake.
sun ra, his sax player john gilmore is amazing, a lot of people consider him just as talented as trane. rashaan roland kirk is the shit too, not necessarily free jazz but he is still awesome.
