I'm wondering how people in communes deal with aging & health issues. If I join a commune, it's going to be permanent. But I'm already 40 years old. What do you guys do when you're 70 or 80? Also what do you do about medical & dental stuff?
Also are there any communes that offer 401(k) or profit-sharing plans (lol)?

    Cheers,

    Weetie

check out the housing co-ops - they might - as for most communes we kindof go back to preinsurance days and many have healers and herbalists there - not only do we do alternative community and energy and bldg techniques but many do alt med. as well - and by golly a few even accept growing old and dying as natural LOL
Why do we have to make it bad most get along fine when older - maybe a bit slower but older aging is by and large what you make it - main stream society buys into the medical/phamaceutical myth of total dependency upon them and so mainstream Needs ins. etc - amish and menonites don't rely on them much either - guess they value getting older rather than penalize it.
I mean when we get to the point when we can serve no purpose - it's time to move on No ? like in die.... but then I guess most buy into fearing death too.

But then all life is what we make of it. Moving out of the mainstream craziness means leaving behind many of their concerns as well.

one advantage of having old people in a commune in canada would be their wealth of knowledge ..especially someone who came from a farm ..now there was self sufficiency ........as far as medical ..in canada the government pays for the doctors and anyone ,at least here ,over 65 also has prescription coverage

i dunno what happens with ol folks already in a commune, but i do know that for an older person to be accepted into a commune is an extremely difficult task.... we had an old brother here for a while and this was one of our discussions... he was 69 at the time and looking for a commune that would take him in,,, he had literally traveled through alot of the us in search of one and not one would accept him because of his age and worries that he wouldnt be able to contribute his fair share ... now he was here a good lilbit of time and i have seen him since at several gatherings and this ol bugger outworked most everyone i saw in either location....granted one never knows how long they will be able to continue to help at that rate of speed or amount of time and ek what will happen when in a couple years they peter out n are needin loads of care from others........ last i knew he was still on his search fror a place to settle down into , grow old helpin n teaching others what he knows and then die a nice peaceful ,loving, family crossing over to the other side,,,,,

oh i believe by not accepting the elderly into an established communal type place is a shame,,, there is sooooo much they can teach the young that only they can do ,,,, something that will be lost if it is not passed on to the younger generations,,,, and i can say the older folks we have had stop here have put many of the younger ones to shame as well,,, hell they have even put me to shame on oocassion... ;)

looks like an intersting place .........in the conference and camps for adults pictures ....in the bottom photo it looks like wavy gravy aka hugh romney .........not that would be a camp to attend ........and for any hippy that doesn't know who wavy gravy is .......that's the guy at the original woodstock festival that announced "what we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000 people"

I'm not OLD yet, but I'm working on it. :)

Here mama and daddy here's the door, your old, you can't stay here anymore. you have to go to a state hospital and get drugged up.

Most Old Hippies have no teeth so they don't need a denist.. and Herbs will be their medicine. Most Old people are sick bc they take dangerous drugs that the doctor gives them. If Man has altered it, don't put it in your mouth, it's posion to the body.

So we are to kick out the old ones eh'.. you mean the ones that took care of us and feed us and cared for us and when they can no longer do our bidding we get rid of them.. OH the Shame of it. Hey.. all you so called communes get over yourselves, your gonna be old one day too and out you go by your own hand.

Have you ever seen an old woman tat out fine lace or bake chocolate pies, or an old man carve a masterpiece outta a hunk of wood!?! Who will teach the young? All the old ways will be lost and shortcuts will take the beauty out of creating something from the heart with your bare hands.

I would suggest that you get your own land and create you a family commune where your sure to have people who love and care for you there and would never send you away. Love is the answer to all things. Love is hard to find elsewhere.

Living in a commune now a days is nothing like it was. There are few that have the love that created them in the first place but there is nothing like having your own and not having to answer to a commitee or be banished when age shows up.
