Why We Fight - Excellent BBC Documentary (Video) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7491733884992868610&q=why+we+fight&pl=true
i watched "why we fight" a rough explanation of the doco is america is a dominant superpower that has made its wars part of its economy and its economy part of its wars, the american economy and its wars are not separate entities. president eisenhower in his farewell speech to the american people in 1961 warns the american people of the dangers of an "industrial-military complex". fast forward to 2004 and we see issues such as employment, politics in a headlong rush into manufacturing lies to create the next war and hence another war with the banner of truth, justice and freedom at its head. eisenhowers greatest fears have become incarnate and the greatest harm to the american people comes not from the "enemy" but a econo-political machine that survives on endless war. war is good. the doco does not offer a solution but asks that we recognise what the problem is first. the doco suggests that this problem has been building for the last 55 years. why let the truth get in the way of making some good money? the final result it suggests is that america is becoming a new rome and just like rome it starts off as a replublic becomes an empire and finally collapses.
Thanks for putting me on to this very illuminating film. I had no idea Eisenhower was such a liberal democrat, fascinating. My favourite documentary of recent years is 'inside the coup', very entertaining, shot by an irish film crew who were doing a documentary on Hugo Chavez at the time of a counter coup. It's all on film, inside the presidential palace, chavez asked for his resignation, under threat of air strike (like what happened to aliende) Thanks for the pointer. X
