oh yea and another question..... i think this one might be very naive of me i've been wanting to get alot more facial piercings but the thought of how hard it might be to get employment is stopping me........ all you with quite a few visible piecings... whats your line of work? did you get shit for not looking standard? -mooka
it probly depends on what field you want to work in, as well as the type of company im a web programmer, and my current company is a small, laid back advertising agency, and theyre fine with a ring in my nose. Though, one of the guys makes fun of it once in a while. There are also many companies in this field that would care about facial piercings
yes you will get shit....... no doubts about it... you'll need to invest in clear-out studs and or have ways to hide the piercings...
one or two, not a big deal usually. I dunno, apparently the company I work for has a no facial piercings policy yet three of us have nose piercings. But we keep small, discreet studs in. Just get some clear retainers, and offer to wear them at the job if it's at all gonna be a problem for 'em
most places have a dress code and that includes NO visible peircings. i work in an office and i cannot have any......i cannot even wear a retainer in my nose! so i had to take mine out. some restaurants will allow face peircings...and at every vet's office i have been to some of the people had face piercings and visible tats so i think vets offices are more lenient. but most places are dead set against it. bullshit.
hehe yea.... my alter ego i guess yea, ok so if i want any chance at a decent job, no piercings or start taking a course on being a professional piercer.... not a bad option really
yeah, lots of people have problems with piercings. get those little plastic thingies and wear them instead, or just wear smaller studs. but if you're going to be working at a place long-term, and you're going to have to hide it every day anyways, might as well take it out and get it re-done at a later date. i don't understand why piercings are so unprofessional, though... i guess it is associated with the rebel side of society.
yeah, I have nothing new to say here, but it really depends where you work. I've had jobs where the boss threatened to fire me when I got my nose pierced.....even though i had a bandage over it and there was even another girl there who had one....grrr. the job that i have now won't allow them (i'm a cashier at a grocery type store). my supervisor thinks it's dumb and has submitted a kind of "petition" to allow employees to wear them. but so far we haven't hear anything.....
Mooka, come and work at my office! We are looking for good staff and I wear a nose stud, which has never been remarked on. I have quite a responsible position and I do greet clients some of the time, and occasionally I am asked to work in the front office. Seriously though, I think as piercings become more common (and a small discreet nose stud is fairly common nowadays) employers will have to be more realistic. Good reliable staff don't always come in standard measures and it's about time that some attitudes changed. I don't mind being served by store staff with piercings or tattoos, as long as the person is polite and reasonably clean. I would much rather see a pierced or tattooed assistant than one with dirty fingernails, for example. OK, fair enough, excluding garage mechanics, labourers, gardeners, and the like, where getting dirty is unavoidable and goes with the job. But you get the general idea ...
As a person who has both dreads and piercings, I am the first to say I think people should be able to express themselves. As long as there is not a REAL safety hazard or sanitation hazard, there is no reason people should not be able to have piercings. It really is ridiculous that someone else has the right to tell you what to wear. Unfortunately, no one HAS to hire you. It's one of those things that is unfair but we can't change. When I had short hair, I got a tattoo on the back of my neck. I worked in a retail clothing shop. My manager said I had to cover it up, but some of the girls wore the sluttiest stuff to work. but my tattoo was offensive? (And on top of that I got nothing but compliments on it). There are just some things we can't avoid. I would suggest what others have suggested, either getting a clear stud (retainer) or taking them out and hoping for the best. Sorry this sucks, I know from experience.
Sadly you are right Pamela. I guess I am very lucky to work in such a tolerant workplace, where the emphasis is on skills and performance rather than lifestyle choices, etc. I recall one workplace where several of us girls wore platform boots. I was the only one asked to stop wearing them. I didn't ... but to keep my job and placate my boss I changed into more regular footwear whilst AT work and back again when leaving the office. I thought that was most unfair since I was singled out and the other two girls were allowed to continue wearing their platforms. And the reason for this ... YOU WILL WEAR OUT THE CARPETS WITH THOSE HEAVY BOOTS!!! (Only me of course ... somehow the other girls' boots would do no damage whatsoever!) Like what you said Pamela being singled out for a tattoo when other girls were dressed inappropriately. Life can suck at times!
Well besides that, having a ring or ink in your skin doesn't mark your intelligence or affect your ability to do your job. Urban Outfitters in Orlando had a number of employees with faciel piercings and hair that is considered "different" by most people. I wrote them a customer feedback saying I was GLAD to see them like that becuase it meant they can express themselves. I was told that they don't get many positive comments (most places/companies/product distributers only get complaints, this wasn't just their store that got complaints)
We should all do this when we see some place that allows piercings. Maybe we can start something.......if there's more positive feedback, maybe this wouldn't be so taboo....
I only have ear piercings, so I don't know personally what it is like. I just know that a LOT of the jobs I have had, in fact most, had some type of dress code. I've worked in places where you could not wear jeans, places where you HAD to have your hair up or pulled back, places where you HAD to wear a dress and hose, places where you HAD to wear make up, if you were female, ect. My dd is a part time waitstaff employee, and they cannot have facial piercings (except earrings, two only, and one nose stud, small) have to wear a UNIFORM and have to wear their hair up, and in a bun or tight pony tail. The men in the kitchen have to wear hair nets. Most jobs DO prescribe what you can and cannot wear. I work in health care, and have been contemplating a tattoo for a long time. My quandry is, I have to get my own clients, a tatoo may have to be easily coverable, and being as health care is pretty conservative, it would HAVE to be coverable, completely, if I were ever to work in a hospital setting, instead of self employed again. From what I have seen, most places which do allow piercings are mostly low paying, entry level jobs. OK, if you are 16 or 20, but once you have a family to support, unless you are owning a tattoo shop, or working on bikes, or are a rock star, I think a large amount of body art would make it difficult to get and maintain a job with good pay and good benefits. Personally, I like body art. It is just that business and industry tends to be a little behind the times, in terms of fashion. One of the jobs I had in the 70s, required girls to wear dresses or skirts and hosery. "Slacks" were not even an option. If anything things are getting better.
Pamela is definitly right.. But what can ya do. And I actually think its different depending on the area you live. I heard some places like California or something don't care what you have in your face or what you do to your hair. Which should be the way everywhere in my opinion. But yeah, I have a lip ring.. and it really is hard to get a job, its usually in the dress code, no piercings. But I have gotten jobs with it. Actually my first real job I got it pierced right after my interview! haha.. So I said I couldn't take it out yet cuz it was healing, they gave me crap but they couldn't fire me. But I don't know how many companies would put up with that haha. I also worked at Whole Foods but they only allowed nose and eyebrow piercings (which may vary depending on which state you live in) so I had to wear a retainer but got away with just wearing a little stud. And thats my current plan for getting a job, wearing a little stud and hoping its acceptable, cuz I'm looking for a job. But yeah I've said too much! Good luck with all that.
oy, I'm going to school in September to be an RN....at least i have 6 years of school to get most of it outta my system....after that, there's always retainers. and all the tats i wanna get are going to be easily coverable......so i guess i'm not too worried. by the time I'm going to school for the midwifery, prehaps times will have changed a little more.....
I have worked in the healthcare field (hospital and mail order pharmacy) and I really haven't had any problems with my mods. I have a large tattoo on my upper arm that stretches from shoulder to almost elbow, tatt on opposite wrist, tatt on back of neck, ears streched to 9/16ths, nose stud, tongue ring, and other misc. ear piercings. I replaced my nose stud with a retainer for the interviews and wore my hair down for the first few weeks, and slowly introduced one mod at a time. After a while I was back to pulling my hair up (showing my ears) and my stud went back in my nose and nobody ever said anything about it. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I am a very hard worker and proved that I can look a little different and still bust my ass
i have a monroe peircing and dreads. I'm a social worker. They never said anything bad about it. They love my dreads tho.
My workplace has a code that says no dangly earrings or facial piercings, and makeup. MY co-worker wears a discreet diamond nose stud. No one cares, on the off chance that they notice it. I do not wear dangly earrings. I wear *A* dangly earring on the right ear. Heh heh heh. As for makeup, I said that either they make the maintenance man wear it everyday, or I'd take them up for sexual discrimination. I think they're more irritated that I wear rainbow striped toe socks with my black shoes and long black skirt. There is nothing in the dress code about socks. They can bite me.
