I've got a pretty good nest egg saved up. Enough to buy a little land and if i do all the labor myself build a little cabin... the problem is if i try to go off the grid and be self-suffiecient it will only be a matter of time before uncle sam shows up with an eviction notice for not paying property taxes... is there a way to get around property taxes if a person has no actual income, owns the land, and is off the grid?? any help in this is greatly appreciated... it's the one thing really keeping me from being able to make the leap. Jason
uncle sam doesn't take too kindly to people who don't play his game... maybe if you host a home for wanderers and become a non-profit? doesn't seem likely, bro
Alaska, they pay you to live there so in essence thier money could pay your property taxes, about a year ago I asked a friend how much they got and her said about $2000 a year to be a resident..... property taxes will not exceed that unless were talkin 100's and hundreds of acres... Mike...
Wow, 2000? No shit? I thought it was like 500, hehe. That's not bad... especially in the arm that comes down toward vancouver.
My ex-wife used to live in alaska... the amount they get paid is based on the size of the family... the more people the more money. Maybe I could start a religion and just have all my land be "church property". I'm sure the Amish don't pay property tax... i need to find one to ask. There just has to be a way around it...
The Amish don't pay property tax, or even income tax, but they also don't get any social benefits that "normal" americans are entitled too. I wish I could wave those options like the amish and not have to pay taxes either. The only time I've ever needed social assistance, I was not eligible at all because a full time student in Tennessee has to work 20 hours a week to be eligible... oddly enough, if I sat on my ass and didn't go to school (and didn't work, therefore, having NO plan to build a better future) they would've cut me a check that day.... crazy.
bheh, most people don't get the assistance they really do need anyway. if I had the option of giving up eligibility to something they'll never let me have anyway for freedom, I'd take that in a second.
Is there any state that doesn't have a property tax? What if you dont register the deed with the state? I dont really know much on this subject, but I want to learn more! So someone please post with some good answers.
Property taxes irk me. In essence you really don't own the land, you just rent it. It is true that Alaska pays you an oil dividend to live here, but the amount varies with the market year to year. IN 2000 it was around $2000, but last year we only got $840, though it is expected to go back up. It is not Uncle Sam that is getting the money, it is state or local municipalities. Here it is the Boroughs as Alaska has no state property taxes. Much of Alaska is not in a borough so much of the state has no property taxes and of course none of the services that property taxes pay for. The 10 acres that our homestead is on is within a borough and every year the tax assessor(sp) pays us a visit to revalue our place. With every improvement the taxes go up. It was pretty cheap with nothing but an airstream trailer on it, but add the house, cabin, greenhouse, shed, and chicken barn and it just get more expensive, reasonable compared to say New Jersey, but still. Build a cabin with your own money and pay to rent it every year from the government just seems wrong. So we bought some really remote property accessable only by river, outside of any borough. After the kids finish high school we plan to move there, or at least for retirement, where we can build what we want without perpetually paying for it. Land taxes suck.
Property taxes are one of the greatest injustices in our country. In the original constitution property taxes were illegal... but they amended it make them legal... But this conversation has given me an idea... I think I might just declare myself Amish... the amish vary greatly from state to state and even settlement to settlement... some are truely primitive, some just use generators to have electricity and have the tv in the barn instead of the house... whatever their charter it seems like there is plenty of flexability... and I do believe it's a religion... so no one can tell me I'm not. I think I need to talk to a lawyer... this just may be crazy enough to work.
Yeah, a lawyer might be a good idea. Seems like a kind of iffy proposition to me. I mean~ What do you need to prove you're Amish?
live on a boat no taxes there get to move around alot i knew a couple who lived on a sailboat had solar panels to power lots of stuff have to pay docking fees if you want to dock to come to land for supplies and things but fee is minimal at some places.
if you have a nest egg I suggest you put a bunch of it in a monthly income fund/ or another type of "secure" investment that pays you dividends or income. that way the money not being used is working for you and paying your taxes and more depending on you investment...
yes go the church route,,,, then in the end in alot of ways you are even more tied to the governmental bureaucratics n bullshit...... goin nonprofit is all well n good iffin you are ready to save every lil piece of paper you generate in a years time n then are ready n willing to go through each n every said paper in order to file all the bullshit paperwork you have in the end n since most the folks today cant function in that sort of capacity you then need an accountant etc which in turn contributes more to society n capitalism etc than ya would have just pay paying your bloody taxes.... .. no matter what road ya chose ya still have big brother pokin his ol honker in in some way shape or form in the end,,,,, get used to it,,, it aint gettin any better anytime soon..... unfortunately
