ive been hearing about phish and assume they are like the grateful dead. i love the grateful dead so i wanted to listen to phish but i dont know any good songs to get off limewire, see if i like them, and if i do ill buy some albums. can you guys give me some good songs?
they are totally different. and I still dont get the comparisons at all. the dead was more into folk/blues, and phish is more jazz/rock
They are only compared to the Dead because once Jerry died lots of deadheads started following Phish and because they are both jambands with a huge and an intensely loyal fanbase. But to anwser your question, some of their more famous songs are You Enjoy Myself, Run Like an Antelope, The Divided Sky, Reba, Harry Hood and Bathtub Gin. Some of my favorite jams also include Charlk Dust Torture, David Bowie, Down with Disease, Fluffhead, Gohst, Guyute, Maze, It's Ice, Gotta Jibboo, Julius, and Stash. If you buy albums you should buy live releases because their studio stuff lacks the energy and improvisation of live shows.
Phish doesn't sound much like the Grateful Dead. Although some of their songs are similar and they are both jam bands, and they both (for the most part) have someone else write their lyruics for them. Anyway, some good Phish songs are Gulah Papyrus, Free, Taste, Wolfman's Brother, You Enjoy Myself, Fee, Story of The Ghost, Stash, just to name a few. Good luck in finding songs. Phish is agreat band, and I think you will dig them.
Just download the first Album, Junta, and listen to it from start to finish. That'll pretty much give you a basic picture.
Phish is the god of music! There I said it. I agree with treePhiend. Definately go for the live stuff. www.livephish.com is what you need to check out. yeah you have to pay for it but there are a few perks. Theres a few perks. A large number of shows to choose from, no threat of viruses that you have on P2P, and everyshow has several reviews to assist you in making your decision. My personal favorites that resemble the Grateful Dead jams in some ways are: 46 Days Golgi Apparatus Chalkdust Torture Moma Dance Waves Wolfeman's Brother Possum (cover)
yea. nothing like the grateful dead. but of the songs you told me too get, i like story of a ghost and golgi apparatus and stash best, once i get some money ill buy their first album
just got to NUGS.net and download anything from 1998....they have the best quality recordings of all the years......
Actually I've heard tons of phish jams that sounded *like* dead jams, denying they are similar in some ways is just stupid. At first I thought they were nothing alike but if you listen to shitloads of both bands you see some similarities. But like someone else said the dead were more into blues but played everything, while phish leans more towards jazz and plays everything. Some years of phish have a lot of funk too, but the dead didn't really use much funk. Someone suggested junta and I have to second that emotion, but you should download live stuff too to see what they're all about.
the dead don't do alot of funk...but they bust out the funk. refer to "Dancin in the Streets" (the later ones) and "Shakedown Street"....plus other jams have gotten funky. i've heard the funk in "scartlet>fire" jams too......i often wish they experimented more with funk....
"They Love Each Other" when it was still fast... that's some filthy hippie funk, I love that song. I don't care for the slowed down version all too much.
Yea isn't it kinda fucked up with some songs the first version you hear is your favorite one heh, for a while the first me and my uncle i heard from fillmore east 71 (Ladies and Gentlemen... The Grateful Dead 4 disc set) was my fav , but man if you got some access check out dick's picks 35 for the best me and my uncle ever. dick's picks 35 altogether kicks ass.
Or West LA Fadeaway? Sure you can find certain versions that are a little funky, but the dead don't use funk much.
