Has anyone seen Magnolia? I consider it one of the most beautiful, fantastic films ever made...top ten of all time for me. How does it manage to be so depressing yet life affirming?
I was glad I borrowed it for free from the library. I have to say that I did not like the movie because it made no sense to me. If there was a message in it, or even a plot, I for sure missed it. Blue skies, -Jeffrey
AMAZING MOVIE! tom cruise was stellar. "respect the cock!!!" bwahahahaha. wow that scene where he gets emotional at his fathers death bed was too good. i didnt get the ending though. frogs???? everything else was beautiful. made sense. cuz thats how life is. everything is connected we just don't see it.
YAY! I loved it...I think the frogs bit is random, but it's kind of nice to have the 'what?!' moment at the end of it all...though for some I suppose it may feel like a let-down...
i loved the movie. (please note that my SN is from "jay and silent bob strike back" and does refer to the movie "magnolia." but see J and SB strike back to get the joke ;-) does anyone know if the stories in the begining were true or fictional.... it'd be totally crazy if that stuff really happened. -peace
I am completely crazy for that shit! It's amazing the way things just aren't for us to figure out. Magnolia is the most nonsense and meaningfull movie at the same time. The forgs...?Who knows...I just thought it was like the fears of everyone falling down from the sky...it had somehow a connection with my feelings about the characters's feelings when I watched. Just perfect. For sure it is in my top 10 with Requiem for a dream.
I watched it last week. It was okay. I wasn't too crazy about the music video in the middle of the movie or the frogs.
it is a great movie. i can't handle watching most TV or movies nowadays without feeling the need to die. but, magnolia, i have watched quite a few times. Definetly has some great characters. I think the movie gives it's share of underserving bad reps, but oh well...good movie. and yes, it is a "depressing" movie. That true happiness and peace of mind comes skimmin' through rays of those unwanted, very violet indeed emotions OH SO MUCH.
It's a great movie especially the end with the frogs ,the connection of the plot, and the Aimee Mann soundtrack.Even though it is a rip-off of Robert Altman's "Short Cuts"(not sure about the title, the one with the earthquake in the end).
Are you guys sure that you watched the movie? I mean really really watched it. There was a ton of symbolism all through out. THere were paintings of magnolias all over the place thruogh out the movie. The frogs in the end, were just to affirm one of the recurring lines in the movie, "this really happens" Frogs actually did fall out of the sky somewhere, I read about it once, I'm sure that it wasn't really that heavy of a frog shower, but it did happen. The "musicvideo" i nthe middle of the movie, was really just part of the soundtrack that worked it's way into the plot, watch it again, and approach it from a dissective standpoint, take it all in like a painting, and take from it what you will, it's full of all sorts of things that make you go hmmmmm.
i thought the bit where they all sing that song in the middle was amazing...it's one of those things that isn't done often enough...a nice bit of exposition that reminded you it was a film...but also made it more realistic for me...how many times have you felt a certain way and started singing a song that explains how you feel? i know i do it all the time... what i liked about it is that it's nearly 3 hours long...and tho a lot of it was unnecessary to the film...nothing felt forced...the story moved at the right pace and unfolded just right...like a flower i suppose... the whole thing had a last ten minutes of a film speed to it...lots of quick cuts and fast movements...the shots and the movements of the camera made the whole film feel like a two and a half hour crescendo... *spoiler warning* the frogs...i don't know...it felt like the whole film was building up to the frogs...and it does tie a lot of it together...it stops the gameshow guy killing himself...it makes the cop and donnie meet up...it makes claudia(?) and her mum get together...it makes the kid feel better...like the kid said...it happens...it's something that happens... i really liked it a lot...it's one of those films i'll watch a few more times and try and figure it all out and look for the subtext and symbolism...not enough films give you a reason to go back and rewatch it...but this is one that does...it's much better than boogie nights...tho a lot of people told me boogie nights was better...maybe because they didn't get magnolia...
