So that gig I was freaked about not working out turned out to be one of the best I've ever played, even though it was a charity gig at my drummer's highschool. The other guitar player ended up coming, and we got this totally psychedelic jazz improvisation going...we jammed each tune out, building to intense climaxes...and it was just so beautiful...and we jammed into other tunes. We also recorded some of the gig, and listening back to it, it was just fucking magical... I can't remember the entire set list, but it included some standards (Blue Bossa, Summertime, Autumn Leaves, etc.) and a whole lot of funk and blues (a lot written by the other guitarist and I, a lot improvised, and some rock covers including Peace Frog by the Doors hahah) We closed the last set with Miles Davis' All Blues and then Blues for Los Angeles by Bill Frisell...which went into a funk jam and then a latin bossa feel...man, the last two tunes were so beautiful and intense and magical and psychedelic, it was so great... I just love playing gigs like that (especially when they're recorded) where you can just feel the energy, and you can share a consciousness with the other musicians (another guitarist, and a drummer) and create something amazing...I just feel so incredible right now after listening to it...we definitely would have used the recording for something except there is talking and noise, and stuff, so it wouldn't work, but now that I've found this combination of musicians, I'm sure we'll recreate it...but wow...
Congradulations, those magical gigs always stay with you forever. Our band has a gig this weekend (Powder Keg) which was news to us all monday. Now that our drummer is down we're having intense eight hour day practices until saturday night. Playing with the band is way different from playing solo, like, both have their pros and cons, ya dig? My sis plays sax and clarinet so we have her come up and solo, its quite far out if you ask me.
That's awesome, man! I'd love to hear your band. Where are you from, and do you have any recordings or anything?
I'm from a wee town in rural new brunswick (called Grand Falls which, to my surprise, is in bold font on the map). We're a three piece band, but we play just for the fun of it. I'm a solo artist myself and I am seriously persuing music, I record almost everynight in my basement. Like, mostly fingerstyle contemporary folk music, in the style of Don Ross, Bruce Cockburn, Ani DiFranco, and the like. I don't know, but I think its a good balance having the one project that is to be taken seriously and then the other which is more of a form of recreation than anything. How bout your band, tell me aboot it.
it's enjoyable to read your thread , congratulations because your gig turned out so well. i ish i would have been there and i wish to play sessions like that as well, inspirational and stuff....
My band does kind of spacey jazz-rock. At the moment, it's a trio (2 guitars and drums) and I'd like to keep that for now because we've got a really good sound... We're doing sort of modal jazz, free jazz, and blues...which usually starts out kind of groovin' and sometimes more ambient...then builds up to really psychedelic climaxes. It's very improvisational, so we'll change grooves all the way through. Our drummer is amazing, and can play any groove in any time signature, and sound really awesome doing it...but he is a fairly loud drummer, and likes his rhythms heavy... The other guitar player has played 8 years of classical, so he does this very fast blues, and jazz and stuff with his fingers. He's got a really unique style, and I've been playing with him for like 3 years, so we've can jam really well together and can get a lot of interesting ideas flowing. I'm a blues and jazz player, and I'm influenced by a lot of guys, right now mainly Bill Frisell, Robbie Robertson, Marc Ribot, Jerry Garcia, Buddy Guy, some Tony Rice and some other people...I have interesting and unique phrasing and I like to do a lot of "outside" improvisation. I don't get a chance to play that many gigs, or record that often, but I'm jamming several days a week and playing/practising and composing constantly...I love it though and I want to make a career out of it...
