My neighbor just gave me a little turtle;he's so cute and curious. I named him River. Anyway he loves the water; I set up his house. I've been feeding him cantaloupe and cucumbers; that was what my neighbors had been feeding him for the past month. Today, I gave him a peice of tomato...he attacked it, I've never seen him eat so much! Anyway, what else can I feed him to keep him well?
What kind of turtle is it? If you don't know what is it exactly describe it at least so I'll get a general idea. Is it wild caught or captive bred? There's no need to lecture over what's already been done, but I hope it was captive bred. Turtles, or tortoises (which do you have?) are in general difficult pets to maintain. I believe turtles to be near sacred and I want you to take care of the best you can. I don't think the diet you're feeding it is healthy for any turtle, and probably not any tortoises. Does it have a resting spot out of water (to avoid shell rot)? What about heat and a filter? Can you tell me about it's home set up? I have quite a few books on turtle/tortoise care, and can find you a few good sites at least if I know what kind you have. Good luck, Mandy
Awww congrats on your 'baby' No idea about diets myself, but there are bound to be websites. So running a google search might be a good idea. River is a gorgeous name, I plan to use it for a son (not that I'll be having kids anytime soon) TTFN Sage
I just looked this up for you because I have nothing better to do right now: If you go to http://happyturtle.ms11.net it gives you a bunch of information including how to feed turtles. Hope it helps.
thanks everyone....happy turtle is cool website. They said that melon and tomatoes are fine. I just need to try to introduce some protein now. Oh, and he's a water turtle. I have a little beach set up for him, it's made out of dry pebbles. He is in a warm room.
I assume a Red eared slider then. A warm room definately won't do. Also, you need the proper light for them so it can get the vitamins it needs. I'll post some more tomorrow out of the book I have on red eared sliders. Expect to spend a bit of cash for a happy turtle.
I took my puppy to her vet for a check up today and in the room beside me I heard the vet tell a woman who had her turtle there to feed her strawberries. I'm not sure what kind of turtle it was.
i've always wanted to care for a turtle..but when i finally was able to get one...i was told that it was illegal...at least in canada or at least only ontario in canada...i don't know..i was really sad..but that's cool! enjoy having fun with the turtle..and good name
I have a turtle and i have had it for 10 yrs and i dont know what kind it is. It was found in a creek/stream and its tan with black lines/ spots the shell is browinsh with black but it has moss on it so its hard to tell. its always in the water except to breathe and it was found in Ga any help?
I have always wanted a turtle. But I have this thing where I dont believe in caging or tanking anything...so I cant bring myself to have one. But I have always wanted one. My cousin used to keep them....watching them eat is the funniest thing! River is really great name. You should think about maybe getting him a little companion. Anyway, good luck with River!
hehe, i have just bought a turtle too, the turtle its self wasnt expensive but the whole set up was. he's so cute, he is a south american turtle, he's shell is greenie yellowie & his skin is yellow & black striped & under his shell is bright orange. he is well kewl, i have called him tattoo because i am a tattooist & his skin looks like its tattooed on.
I'm sitting here crying; I loved that turtle. I went to the store to get him some protein sticks. When I came home it was too late, he had already died. My advice is to feed your turtle turtlesticks along with fuit and veggies. I'll miss you , River.
I'm sorry River died,he may've been malnourished when you got him. One of my cats brought a tiny turtle home years ago,it was in her mouth roundways, like a silver dollar.Such a look of suprise on that cats face! I kept it,bought the turtle pellets from wallyworld, had a nice 'home' for it,that little guy lived for 3 years in captivity.I set him free at the pond when I moved to the country.I see lots off turtles hangin' out on a log on sunny days and like to think that he's one of them. (Turtles & tortoises seem so wise). NOW, when I find a turtle,I put it in the safest place nearest to where it was found. They're all over the roads here! If it's been injured I call the Biology Dept. at the University and they'll take it in to treat and release. They're really cool people!
awww, soo sad!! I love turtles, I collect everything turtleish and everyone that knows me knows about my obsession. When I was younger I brought home turtles all the time! I was a tomboy that lived in the country so it was easy to find them. Now I feel too bad to keep one in captivity, I feel like I'm doing something wrong, though I would LOVE to have a pet turtle. I'm sorry River died, though, that is really sad.
