    Hey guys,
I've been trying to not let this bother me, but I have been wanting dreads for at least 2 years. About 6 months ago, I stopped brushing my hair ( shoulderlength and straight as a board). Anyway, I have not a single tangle in my hair. I was my hair in Dr. Bronner's soap no conditioner. What is going on?? Is it possible that my hair will never dread? If I had many friends, I would not go naturally and just let them backcomb, but I really don't know that many people that would be willing to do that ( actually I don't know any) and I feel like there is a void in me because I don't have dreads and I want them so much. Can someone help me? Thanks for any advice, tips...anything.

Maybe you should check the internet, check www.knottylocks.tk. Maybe there's someone who would like to dread you.

You could also get it started at a shop. Some people here said that they did their own but I couldn't have started my own. Go to a shop that usually works with African American hair and ask if they can start dreads on your hair. (Just go through the phone book as ask "do you all start or maintain dreadlocks?")Name your hair type specifically). I suggest a place that does African American hair because they are more familair with dreadlocks. Ask if they had ever started them on (your hair type) hair. Go to knottyboy.com or dreadheadhq.com and print out the basic instructions for them (wax is up to you. Everyone on here says NO to wax and I stopped using it as well).

Don't let them scam you either. I got mine started fora reasonable $50. Shop around and don't automatically go to the first shop you hear of.

    Good luck.

screw backcombing, you can do it naturaly, i would suggest getting yourself some beads (& patience) then just take your hair seperate em into clumps (use a loop of string throgh the bead to grab the ends of the hair & pull em through) & force the bead up till where it just stays (if too high adda second lower with a lil smaller hole) once your hairs forced into staying in the clumps it will dread nicely..but will take several months or so..knotty boy has tightening teas u spray on, ..but i never tried em
    but yea pics would help..
oh alternates to beads could be dong wraps....but id stear clear of those messy wax ideas..

So, just put my straight hair into pieces and put beads on them? How will they stay on and not slip off? I'm liking the idea!

You may want to try soaking your hair in salt water. That's how I started mine...it dried my hair out and tangles began to form...

    Just an idea.

i would guess it wasnt working to well for you because of your straight as a board hair (also it sounds like you have real thin hair) i would start rubbing your hair with wool (alot) and get some lock accelerator. you can make lock accelerator from salt water and lemon juice. once you been rubbing your head for a while (maybe a few weeks) if its starting to dread just stop touching it and leave it alone. make sure you have the right shampoo too (residue free or a clarifying shampoo). I hope my advice helps.
    peace
