Does anybody know of a meditation that would replace or subsitute the effects of sleep? Does one even exist?

I always viewed sleep as a form of meditation. It's your body's natural way of working out the turmoil inside of you.
I would be interested myself if there is another answer to this.

But, why would one want to replace sleep? I can't get enough of it! ^_^

most lammas and monks would tell you that just the act of meditation could lower your need for sleep. Like an hour of med is suspose to equal a few hour of sleep. Don't think you need any specific mantra or visual but not being so tired your minds racing is important. Just the monkey mind alone is exausting!

sorry man. I can tell you though that I have done some extra curricular activities that have kept me awake for extended periods of time, and guided meditation tapes (any would work that make you feel good) were the only thing that kept me from loosing my mind. As an insomniac even without drugs, guided meditations help immensly for feeling rested so you dont have such a thin feeling the next day or lure you to sleep. Ram Dass and Wayne Dyer talk alot about this.

i don't think you would be able to replace sleep, fully or partially, with meditation. without sleep, you die...your brain has to dump built-up chemicals, which happens during sleep.

i think if you actually achieved it, you'd just be sleeping anyway!

The yogi's advocate using mediation for that exact purpose. Some are also capable of changing there heart rates in either direction just by will and breathing exercises. Theyre are documented cases of some also able to lives for years off of little or no food other than coffee. Check it out man! Look up the new boy budda. It's interesting stuff.
