lately when I play videos which I downloaded with bittorrent i get this error message, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found," or "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might support the codec that was used to compress the file." I've downloaded every codec I can think of and have reinstalled bittorrent and am still having problems. Any suggestions as to what I can do or any codecs I may use?

I get that sometime, it usually is the file, which may be corrupt/damaged or incomplete. I don't use WMP, but I would recommened you trying VLC media player. It plays almost every type of file/format/codec.

    Good luck. =)

As gravity says, install vlc...it'll play 99% of all files you download

    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Click here and follow the link to download the software.

Media Player Classic is also around the same compatibility as VLC, personally I think it's easier to use, too. Also, if MPC can't play a file, it'll let you do a codec search.

Bear in mind that the only big difference between VLC/Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player is that the former are more compatible with corrupt files/better subtitle support.

Anyway, if VLC/MPC don't work, your best bet is to open the problematic file with Media Player Classic and look through the error message, there should be a 3/4 letter code in there like IV40, DIVX, or XVID, something along those lines.. anyway, if you seatch for that on google you should find the codec you're looking for.

Another recommendation for VLC here too. I've been using it for several years, and you can't go wrong with it. Media Player Classic is also a good alternative, but doesn't play as many files as VLC can "out of the box".

download a small freeware prog called G-Spot then drag your flik into it...it'll tell you what codecs are needed, then google for codecs, download and install them...

when media player or any other gives you that error, it's saying you don't have the proper codecs installed

or you can look for an all in one codec pack. Theres a good one that goes by that name. I beleive you can also get quicktime and realplayer codecs there as well

search for klite codec bundle on google & install it, should solve most codec issues, i find that from time to time some file acts up in winamp & works fine in windows media player
