    marci,

volunteering is the way to go. free food, free music, good friends. if you want you can use my name on your application, send me a pm.

i'm working up in the camping office. i was dispatching the troops last year, my assignment now is phone operator, and i have no idea if that is the same thing.

    see you all in august!

I will be at the General Store again this year, I am on the Purchase and Supply committee. I love volunteering for Fest!!!!!! This will be my 4th year. I am really looking forward to hearing Chris Smither this year. My first year he was the ONLY performance I liked. I am hoping some good bands are at the camp stage this year. I'll tell ya' volunteering is the only way to get a real Fest vibe. The best parties happen days before the paying campers show up on Thursday/Friday. I usually go for 7 days, sometimes 8 if I stick around for clean up and the Chinese Banquet that the P & S committee have every year for it's workers. I have been lucky enough to have become a crew cheif over the last 2 years, so I have it pretty easy. I still go out of my way to help though, I feel guilty when I am doing NOTHING...jheheheheheheheheh!!!!!

I live pretty far so it'll be hard to go, but I am getting another job in which the money I make will be stictly my "concerts and festivals" fund. So, if I can actually GET OFF work, and have enough money by then . . . then I will go!

If you are signing on as a volunteer, you have to do it now, not when you get there. In all actuality, things are becoming a little ridiculous in the way of organization there and some of the "higher ups" are becoming money grubbing scumbags. Now, to become a volunteer, you have to become a MEMBER of the Folk Song Society...this means extra cash. Not that it's alot of money to join, but how much money do they really need? They recently stated that they are working with close to a 1 million dollar budget.....looks like capitalism is starting to penetrate this festival. I may not go this year now. They have made heavy camping bigger which is fucking up ALL the campsites to the left towards the creek, it's bullshit. I may just go to the Falcon Ridge Fest next year, it's WAAAAAAAAY more laidback and relaxing to go to, cheaper as well..

I don't get involved with the politics, it is hard to find a show where money is not a focus. In the defense of the folk song society, they lost money last year. They support scolarship adn research at the school of ethnography at UPenn, and hold concerts throughout the year. They are not making you buy a full membership, but pay ten dollars, which is not that much to get to volunteer. I mean a lot of places make you pay up front to volunteer then you have to wait to be reimbursed. All they want out of you is a verbal commitment to show up for your shifts. They also feed you for four days...you could consider that ten dollars well spent. If you live in the philly area, you can upgrade to full membership later and apply your ten bucks to it, which means a year of concerts, discounts to spring fling etc.

I'm sorry if you take this the wrong way, but I love the fest bc this is one show where people are there for the music. where there is a whole tent up to learn how to dance, and there are a ton of kind folks. it's not 18 year old frat boys running around trying to buy weight and skip out as soon as they made their money. The volunteer program for this show is pretty damn amazing. If you aren't happy on your committee, you should try another one. I work up in the camp office and we always have lots of fun. The sometimes broadcast the shows we can't see while we are working, and we have a clean porta-potty to use.

I don't take it the wrong way at all. I'm the guy who told you about the volunteering situation last year and how to become one, (I used to go by another name here before the change). I know how the PFSS works and I also know that they make quite a bit of money off of the concerts throughout the year and the Spring Fling and Fall Thing. I attended the Sring Fling and spent quite a bit of $$$ there and the place was packed. They made good coin for it this year.

I am just disappointed that they feel they need MORE money from the volunteers. I think it's more about principal to me. Many of the volunteers have been goin for 20 + years and are unhappy with the current changes, this is to be expected. Without us, it would cost them much more $$$$$ to put on the event. You do realise that the volunteers still end up spending alot of $$$$ there with the vendors even though we are fed 3 times a day (much of the food is donated). I question it when they ask for more $$$, I know it's only $10, when they claim to be running the Fest on a close to 1 million dollar budget. They didn't lose all that much money last year. They also made the heavy camping area larger to collect more $$$$$ for the space. This directly affects the camping area for the volunteers.

I am also getting sick of the drunk and drug riddled teenagers only coming up for the 3 days that the paying campers get in and stumbling through and mess up other people's campsites. They act like it's just a crazy ass party and fuck it up for the people that come thier to relax and get buzzed up. I get pretty fucked up while I'm there and you won't see me tripping over people's tent stakes and ripping them out of the ground simply because I can't handle my substances.

These are just my opinion's though and I don't want to make it seem like it's not a good time. It's a GREAT time and I would highly suggest that everyone get to this festival while it still has some dignity left. I'm just looking for a different scene I guess.

I see where you are coming from man.

It's getting more and more expensive to go to shows.

I too am getting tired of the teenagers who ruin the whole scene by going too far with their parties.

    It's sad, man.
