veg*n is referring to vegan and vegetarian.....i think it stems from the fact that sometimes you can use a * in search engines as a wild card.....meaning * can be anything so it could be "a" in the case of vegan or "etaria" in the case of vegetarian...

    ummm, or something like that....i think....maybe :D

Personally, I don't like "veg*n." It kind of implies that vegans aren't vegetarians. And "veg*n" just confuses people. I just say "vegetarian."

Yup, it's written shorthand for 'vegetarian/vegan'.

Shows that you're in the secret club :)

    Yup.

In computers and programming and stuff, using * in a word means "replace with any number of characters" such as letters and numbers.

So to write veg*n, that would match both "vegetarian" and "vegan". It's basically a nifty little way to write "veg" when you want to refer to pretty much all non-meat-eaters.

    Yay for veg*ns!

Hmm never heard that theory before.
Vegan is usually* said 'vee-gun', so can't see the issue there.

*allowing for variations in accent etc

I use veg*n when discussing a food or diet when I'm not sure it whether it would be considered vegetarian or vegan.

It's a wildcard taken from computer programming, meaning u can insert anything there...for variation, and it fits in an internet forum imo. So many types of vegetarian diets, octo-veg...(sp), lacto-octo-veg...(sp). The wildcard just nicely rounds them up.

Maybe it is to show/indicate that the term is holy and sacred... much the same way some Jews write G*d or G-d.
