sort of like classical versus blues. which one do you think is more important?

i tend to think a good balance between the two is key.

Who says you can't have emotion when composing?

true. but what i'm trying to say is that do you think it's more important to put emphasis on thinking things out and composing them or making good music in the moment?

The composition is just like a foundation for a piece of music. Many great classical composers, such as Mozart, would improvise while playing a written piece in a live performance. Much like people do in jazz. Using the spontaneity of the moment to add to the composition.

I suppose it would depend on what type of music you are trying to create.
Some classical can be very emotional as well as some blues being very technical.

yeah. i think did a very good job of making masterpieces in the studio and then getting really into the music on stage. same with hendrix. he didn't layer as many guitar parts as zep did but he did do a lot of work in the studio

I'd rather listen to someone put their heart and soul into a bunch of powerchords than listen to someone emotionlessly blaze through 200 scales per second.

Powerchords are more emotional than the Moolight Sonata?

I didn't say that. If I had a choice between someone putting their heart and soul into a bunch of powerchords, or some virtuoso who put no emotion whatsoever into a song, I'd choose the former.

I don't mean to say that all songs with powerchords have emotion put into them, nor do I mean that all virtuoso solos have none.

i think it depends on who you are. little girls are listening for composition (hilary duff, britney spears, you get the jist of it). some people just like to rock out, while other like to think about the message and meaning of the musical peice.

personally, i choose emotion over composition anyday. ANYDAY.

I don't think it is so much a conflict between composition and emotion, it is usually people trying to balance, technical vs. emotional. A person can compose something very emotional but its very hard to be very technical and for it sound emotional. I have heard GIT grads. play extremely technical stuff but to me it doesn't sound emotional at all. A good piece of classical music, that is totally composed, can be very moving. Even in improvised music their are trade offs between emotion and technical virtuiousity. Like in some atonal jazz, it is very technical and not emotional, but is heavily improvised.
