Hard to say, Mark knopfler has a lot very nostalgic thing to it, i discoverd Dire Straits at the age of 4, and from then on've been into music, from then on i knew i wanted to play guitar. in 92 Mark was the greatest guitar player around, Pete was only playing acoustic in this period. But while jimi page got older and slower Pete proved worthy of the throne in 2001 where he blew every one away, showing what all the fuzz was about.
i think i already gave my top 5 somewhere in this thread but its constantly shifting

Pete is on of my favs, he's just a genius, not just on guitar, you should hear him speak (on rock, youth, drugs, mysticism etc, he's the rock pope, and david bowie is the high priest:)) also one of the greatest song writers, and pianists, and one of the few people smart enough to program synthesisers way back in the days, a true pioneer.

blackmore, Jeff Beck, Clapton just for the myth around the man, i don't know.
Can't forget Link Wray, if it wasn't for him none of our heros, or our hero's heros would have ever picked up a guitar!

    Peace

    Jimmy Page is incredibly overrated.

As for greatest guitarist...hm. A tie between Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour.

    Hendrix.

Possibly not the greatest technically, but he blew the doors off convention anyway, and his technique is inimitable. A brilliant composer, 100 years ahead of his time as far as ideas, and no one holds a candle in live performance. Can't get any better than Jimi. We're extremely fortunate we got five years of recordings and film footage, so even if you didn't see him live there's no doubt that he's the greatest. Clapton is a distant second, because he also can sing and play...but it's a case of Gretzky and Lemieux.

Hey just the opening riff on Little Wing is enough to make good guitarists pack it in. ;)

    *nods*

Jerry is the single most versatile guitar player I've ever heard. Whether its blues, jazz, rock, jam, r&b, even somewhat metal, the guy simply could do it all.

Steve Vai (Zappa's bitch) is really good, not the best, but worth an honorable mention.

For me Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix tie for first.

But other really good guitarist are David Gilmore, Eric Clapton, Brian May, and Joe Perry(Which Is a shame no one has said him yet).

I think if guitar playing were a religion.... Hendrix would be God. That would make Jimmy Page like... uh... Jesus?
