Well, Sweet Baby James spent a night in the E.R. Part of a night anyway. He started projectile vomiting and had the squirts. Fever, abdominal pain. I didn't want him to get dehydrated so we took him in around 3 in the morning. Nurses loved him. They thought he looked like the Quiznos talking baby from the commercial. Anyway, they gave him Pedialyte. He didn't know what to do with the nipple so he didn't get much of it. I asked the nurse if I could just BF. She said "It's not a good idea to give them dairy when they're vomiting." HA!!!! I fed him anyway. They watched to make sure he could hold hid fluids and let us go. He's getting better now.
mmmm.....strange.....can't think of the last time that I looked and saw that breastmilk was the same as cows milk..... sounds like you did the right thing by taking them to get checked but also following your own instincts and knowledge!
Glad he's feeling better. I always feel so helpless when any of my kids are sick, it just breaks my heart to see them not feeling like their usual selves. {{{Hugs}}}
ugh. once, while dave was travelling for work, i woke up because my baby was HOT. then she got febrile convulsions, which i'd never seen before. it was about 3AM (why is it always 3AM??) i called her doctor because her fever was about 105-106. i had to give her tylenol (which she vomitted up). and when her fever didn't go down, my doctor told me to give her a lukewarm bath, which was a TORMENT. it was so damned sad. poor baby. but her fever wouldn't go down, and she started getting all lugubrious and slow. so i strapped her into her carseat, wondering if i should bundle her up because it was the dead of snowy winter outside, and drove her to the ER. jesus, i'll never forget that night. they got her to take motrin, it took a LONG time, and they got her fever to a manageable level. it was so awful.
I feel so SAD for him! He's not a very cuddly baby, but now he'll just cleave to me and be all snuggly. I wold ordinarily LOVE that but it just seems so pathetic becase I know how crummy he's feeling. My poor, poor baby. "sniffles"
Poor thing! Right now, Virginia has kept a 102 fever all day. Tylenol is not helping. I've basically kept her in the tub and full of popsicles to keep her cool. She's got a bit of a sinus thing going, and I am hoping it will go away by tomorrow because I hate going right to antibiotics and that is all a dr will do.
That's a bunch of b.s. about dairy thing interfering with hydration. Your breast milk would definately help your baby hydrate! Along with the comfort factor. Think about it, it has water in it too! Especially if you kept yourself hydrated, your baby would get all that ! Hey YOU were right!
How's little Virginia? Feeling better? Jim still has the diahrea and is still working on getting his appetite back. How long will this last?
I am so sorry the baby is so sick. Was it Roto Virus? It can really make a baby sick. I think Lactation should be a MANDATORY course for all doctors and nurses. As others have said, human milk is not a "dairy" product! Pedialyte is identical to human milk, in it's electrolyte composition. But human milk has good fats, proteins, growth factors, antibodies ect, that Pediatlyte just can't match. Sage got sick like this, at about 18 months old, after a LLL conference, of all places. (All those kids, in one place, many from all around the USA and from other countries, I am guessing people didn't want to cancel their visits because their kid was sick. Sad. I wonder how many other kids got sick there, I heard a lot. If only ONE or two parents had been more responsible and not brought a sick child to the conference, many kids could have been saved illness. Doesn't it make you mad when you realize that one parent being more responsible could have saved your baby from an illness like this? Off Soap Box, now.) I hope James is doing better. Some kids will get constipated for a while after a bout with this type of illness. Usually it is just because their intestinal tract is almost empty. It can take weeks for them to be back all the way. Jazz, try some powdered Bifidus Probiotics. I would just wet my finger and let the baby lick it off. It replaces the good bacteria which was killed off during the illness and the purging. Bifidus is better for babies than Acidophlus (acido won't hurt them, but Bifidus is what is normally found in a healthy breastfed baby's intestinal tract, and is what needs to be replaced after a purging illness.) Eventually his body (with help from your milk) will replace the good bacteria, but using a Probiotic helps them recover faster. Take care of yourself, Jazz, Maybe start taking some enteric coated Acidophilus yourself, to protect yourself from the illness. Nothing worse than trying to take care of a baby with gastroenteritis. sugmag, I hope Virginia is feeling better, too. I found sudafed (real sudafed, not that "sudefed PE" crap, and a mucous breaker is good before going to an antibiotic. If a few days on these don't help, or if her fever just won't break, then of course see the doctor. Take care, mamas. Blessings, love and health to you and your babies.
Also, Tylenol comes in a (ug) suppository, and there is a form of Ibuprofen which can be rubbed on the wrists. (Both for children who aren't keeping anything down.) The Tylenol can be bought at the store, the Ibuprofen has to be made by a compounding pharmacist, with a prescription from your baby's doctor.
Well, I've been on acidophils for awhile for thrsh maintenence. Been giving Jim acidophils powder too, sometimes in breastmilk sometimes in some banana. I will get DH to by some bifids too! Sorry my spelling is wonky, the last vowel key is acting fnny!
Thanks, Jazzmama and Maggie. Her fever finally broke early yesterday morning. She woke up and said" It's wake up time and I not sick anymore!" She's still congested and coughing but the mucus is breaking up quite nicely. I'm pretty sure that the cough is from drainage-but it sure keeps ME up at night!! Jazzmama, I'm glad James is feeling a bit better. I know that diarrhea can be tough. Is his little tushie sore? My kids would always get a bad rash and would have to spend most of the day soaking in the tub!
Maggie, the Ped on call at the hospital never said what it was he has. I looked ep (again, my last vowel won't work, so I'm wingin' it here) the symptoms of that illness ewe were talking aboot. I think that mest be what he has. His poops are terrible. They goosh from him like water. Last night he vomited again. Then he had a terribly giant poop and fell asleep. I wood have jest let him sleep all night like he seemed to want to except that he was getting sleggish and last thing I want is a baby in the hospital being tortred. Soooooo, I spent ALL night jiggling him awake at intervals to nrse. He wood sckle for a moment and then jest fade off, he was so tired. Today he woke ep chipper. Only two poops today, first one was BIG, second not so bad. He has terrible blisters on his hiney hole, I'm slathering it with cream and powder. Now his Daddy and I both have irritated bellies. The Svoboda family is ill!
Healthy blessings to you all. I am so sorry for all the sick babies and mommies and daddies. Keep taking your Acido! Jazz, try some Mylanta on his butt. I am not kidding, the blisters are because the shits were so acidic. The Mylanta deacidfies them. It really works, get the extra strength and just rub it on after a diaper change. I used to leave it on for a while and then put Desitin on top of it. But let it work alone for a few minutes. Don't let him eat it, though, as it is a laxitive. Not what that poor baby needs right now. "I'm not sick anymore." That is so cute. It feels so great when they feel better, doesn't it? Blessings. Maggie
