Yesterday I was watching the news and realized how bad the earth is. The way the climate is changing, earthquakes, cyclons in australia, the ice chunks breaking off in Argentina, the beached wales, the forest fires, bridges and tunels colapsing, the mines caving in!!! what else?? obviously i'm aware of all the problems our environment is facing but it's just too many things at once. i see it as the earth letting us know that it's had enough. for example the mines, the earth doesn't want anymore of it so it caves in. why don't people see whats happening? I honestly feel like something extremely bad is going to happen very soon... it's like a gut feeling... hopefully i'm wrong, but the way things are going ... i see more bad things to come...
Hey Silent Good for you, thats the first step to change thing, to notice what is happing around you. Well the world is NOT CHANGING, the world has just changed and we must learn how to live with those changes that are and will be affecting our lifestyles. And, the worst is that they will become more destructive... Best we can do is to be aware for that, and have no too many children
The earth adapts. The earth is a living creature and will evolve. These natural disatsters have always happened though, and will always. Our modern tehnology and media make them more apparent, our increased population makes it so more people die each time.... Yes, we as humans are doing horrible things to earth. But the earth will adapt, or will it die. Then we will die too....but life I believe will always prevail here.
I think the media is partly to blame, focusing on the bad and almost totally ignoring anything good. This makes people afraid and paralyzed. We should be outraged and protesting things we can influence, like the senseless wars in Iraq and Darfur. Jm2c
Thats an interesting thought really, we are destroying it and maybe the earth has had enough. But I also agree the media does focus on negative things constantly.. That is why I never watch the news. But I just like had a reality check about the world the other day.. Nobody really cares about our environment, we have global warming coming at us and is anyone doing anything about it? Its scary.
It is, very scarey. My question is, what is it going to take, how BAD will things have to get, before the rest of the people wake up/stop ignoring, and realize that radical change is going to need to take place in everyone's life, to help slow down/stop this damage to the earth? And... will the people heed/be willing to make those changes? I think fear, in this case, is a healthy thing. Everyone seriously needs to be awakened!!
People will start to notice when Florida and other low-lying costal areas start flooding. The coast line of the US has been about 100 miles inland in the past. During the ice ages, one could walk from one Key to another. We'll see what happens once the coast comes inland... Peace and love
Additionally, the media typically focuses on unimportant matters (distractions). So much "news" is now turning into "entertainment." It's sick. Nobody cares! That's the problem. Even more problematic are those people whom are aware, but unwilling to take truly effective action to counteract it. It's not surprising, because in order to EFFECTIVELY fix our situation would require most people to abandon their lifestyles (no more automobiles, no more wanton electric usage, no more consumerism in general, etc). It is really alarming to me that even among "environmentalist" types, many are still only concerned with the environment to the extent that it allows them to continue the kinds of gluttonous lifestyles espoused in first world countries like the USA. Sadly, I have very little faith in my common man. Things aren't going to change on a broad scale until it forces people to stop it all. *sigh*
We need to tackle Global Warming as the most pressing enviromental disaster that has hit us. We must find ways to reduce the carbon dioxide ommissions from aircraft journeys & heavy industry factories. We must stop the carbon monoxide ommissions from automobiles ,& the c.f.c.s from refridgerators (industrial as well as domestic). The sea temperatures are rising & this may induce the polar ice caps to melt.Fish are spawning further north -away from the equator becuase the temperatures in their natural habitats are too mild. Pollution of oceans by oil-tanker leaks,& the dumping of petro-chemicals must be tightened up. We must stop using land fill sites for refuse & either burn using clean fuels or recycle.
Worth noting also is the rapid plankton depletion in the oceans: http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/20020801plankton.html Plankton produce half the world's oxygen. Additionally, they have a role in cloud formation and they obvious form the basis for many food chains in oceanic ecosystems.
Have you ever read the poem or short story "There Will Come Soft Rains?" They are about how after humans have destroyed themselves and done their worst to the earth, the earth will still remain and be able to balance itself out.
hey sista, I feel the same way! I hope people will just open their damn eyes! We need to start a revolution to protect our mother earth!
I buy into the Gaia hypothesis. It states that the Earth's boisphere is a living entity. Humanity has become a cancer in Gaia. And she's starting to undergo radiation therapy. Hang on to your hats people. Life on earth will probably survive, but will humanity? Whatever happens, the Earth will be a very different place in 250 years. We've already killed off something like half the species on the planet. Once we quit killing off everything, there's gonna be a major spate of evolutionary change as those life forms which have survived our ravages start to fill in all the empty niches. Personally, I give it less than 20 years before civilization crashes of its own dead weight. I'm practicing living without it now. and even if I'm wrong, that helps the environment now too
I can agree with the general sentiment in the thread but the ranting and raving isn't going to fly if you want to influence anyone. Personally Gaia hypotheses aren't even necessary to grasp the concept that the earth is constantly shifting and changing. To me, that gives it the feeling that it's a living entity. I don't think so. The biota within it are alive - that's all there is to it. The fundamental concept that defines the relationship that humans (and other creatures) have with the earth is its dynamic nature. Less than 20 years is a little exaggerated. I understand the concern, but striking panic does nothing. I try to do my small part, for whatever it's worth, and help others understand recycling or something as simple as walking (rather than driving) are still important but ultimately, the earth will take care of itself, destroy humanity and regenerate with or without us.
i think you got it right there sister.. think that some humanity might have a chance to go on.. but it'll be really only the ones who dont need civilization to survive & there will be a huge population adjustment to saner levels & yea 20 is a conservative estimate probly.. what ppl dont realize is ..or maybe its my personal realization..but ya cant take on "the issues" because theres just too many you can learn how to not rely on the sources..governments..industries..yea civilization..bt not humanity
The news focuses on the bad?? PUH-LEEZE. Anyone old enough to have experienced the vietnam war, on this board, would tell you differently. They had to see that shit on the television EVERYDAY. And not just information on what was going on now, but body counts and other HORRID things. Anyone from our generation saying that the news is disturbing or negative is a wuss. And I personally think the news and other media should ELABORATE more on these horrible events to WAKE EVERYONE THE FUCK UP! I strongly feel that the biggest reason no one is taking action to global warming, war, or other terrible things is because the media BLOWS IT OFF. They don't tell us the extremely bad results of things anymore, therefore, people AREN'T worried. Anyway, I agree with Silent. I'm doing what I can do as an individual to cut down on pollution, and I've donated money to a few different funds for global warming, but with how unaware and uncooperating the rest of the world seems to be about it, we're in a great danger. These aren't just little temper tantrums, that Mother Earth is throwing, she's DYING. And just as we would fight to keep our dog, or our Aunt-whatever alive if they were in danger and dying, we should be fighting to keep our earth alive. Everyone around me sits here and makes fun of me for how insane I get over the planet, but they should be too! I'm not the only one living on this earth, they are too. Don't they realize that without earth, WE don't live?! I just don't get the mindset people have! It frustrates me beyond belief.
I can't believe people actually think that we're a threat to the earth. We're a threat to ourselves because of our wasteful ways, but I just cannot conceive the idea that parasites like the human race could ever pose a threat to the earth. If under any circumstances we become a nuisance to her, she'll simply release a virus or two that we can't cure, maybe a natural disaster or worldwide epidemic, and be done with the human race once and for all. I, however, believe that we'll destroy ourselves before that could ever happen, via nuclear/zombie holocaust. And by the way things are looking, that should happen pretty damn soon.
