I know almost every fantasy/sci-fi fan here will disagree with me, but don't use alot of wild, "unique" names. They're just so corny and re-hashed. Golanth, Oldive, Ruatha, Sintary, Hamian, they all suck. Although, with a good story, shitty names will won't matter(note: Those were all from Ann McCafferey's The Skies of Pern) but still, I think they count, and so will your editor. Alot of screen writers take names out of their high-school year book, maybe you should try that. Mix and match real unusual names till you get something that sounds really good for that character.

I know this sounds like usual names, but try baby books from around the world, or babynames.com That's where I go. It as all the usual names, but it also has names from all over the world, and those can be pretty unusual. That or just look at using some of the really old names. There are several that sound common, but others that are way out there. For example not many people are named Nebuchadnezzar, Marduk, or Loki.
