OK, all i ask is a decent explanation: what exactly happend that they started to sing in the way they do?! I mean... There is some really good music... And lyrics.... But the way they sing them.... I just don't get it. Any comments people?
I'm pretty fond on the way they 'sing'. I like it definately more as the usual death metalvocals, wich I don't really like at all. With black metal it's all about creating a certain atmosphere and the typical black metalvocals definately contributes to that in a great way I think.
If you're less experienced with metal or at least the more extreme substyles of it, you may mean to ask why harsh vocals in general are used in death and black metal. That's just a matter of bands wanting to push the borders of extremity ever further. Continuing from Asmodean's post, black metal is about creating a level of extremity as high as that of death metal, but done from a totally different angle. Black metal wants to invoke a whole other (yet equally negative) emotion within the listener and thus needs different ways to accomplish this. Black metal (usually) focuses on cold darkness more than on brute force, and screeching fits that better than deathgrunts. Look at it this way: death metal wants to pound your body to a soppy pulp with a hammer of hostile energy whereas black metal wants to infiltrate your mind and consume you from within with frozen claws of hate. I think you'll agree the blunt force of grunting fits death metal better and the sharp piercing rasps go along better with black metal.
cradle of filth is fuckin awesome, but dani has to go. replace him with someone like rob halford or bruce dickinson or anyone who actually hits notes and then they will be a way better band
Real black metal is emporer, dimmu borgir, dark funeral, arcturus, etc... And I can do black metal vocals easily.
Grunting vocals are just part of the music, really. I think they want to be as extreme as possible, in every way..
The reason why the sing like they do is because it fits to the cold music. And Dimmu Borgir is not real black metal. Real first wave black metal is Venom and Celtic Frost, real second wave black metal(which we discuss here) is old Darkthrone, old Mayhem and old Emperor!
Celtic frost ...I love them ..thats fucking awsome they reformed and I get to see them twice this fall!! cant wait
Yeah how awesome is it that Celtic Forst are releasing a new album, just the fact that their together is a great thing.
hehe, good ol' black metal gotta love it personnally I think the vocals fit just well, they just like an instrument. I like especially those howling vocals like Ululate. some bands have a good combination of both clean and "black" vocals like Borknagar some songs, and Vintersorg most of the time. so many bands actually oO Storm is awesome, and so is The Third and the Mortal. but thats kinda different I guess
