And/or because a lot of people here are vegan, but most people who are vegan started off vegetarian. So if you were a vegetarian who went vegan, say when you did both. I've been a vegetarian for almost 4 years. I'm working on making my vegetarian diet more strict so I can become vegan easier (chiefly giving up eggs, trying to eat healthier because I figure I need to eat well as a vegetarian before I can even think of going vegan), but I wont become vegan until I move out. I'm doing that to make it easier on both me and my family- my parents spend a lot of money getting me vegetarian food, g-d bless 'em, and it would be a lot to ask of them to make them buy me even more extra food. And I think it would be a lot easier for me to give up milk and whatnot if I don't have them in my house. At least, to start. I'm sure after I am one for awhile, it'll be easier. Your turn.
I've been a vegetarian on & off for 31 years. I ate meat for the last time 10 years ago. I ate fish for the last time 5 years ago. I have been a vegan for allmost 2 years. Along with eating a vegan diet, I try to eat or drink only organic/bio products. While much is said about a vegan/vegertarian diet, I'm surprised more people are not just as concearned about what's in or used to grow the food they do eat.
Wow, feministhippy, we're in pretty much the exact same boat! I've been vegetarian for 4 years, I've been trying to become vegan for the last couple of months and I'm waiting to move out before I go completely vegan because I don't want to ask my parents to buy special food.
I've been vegetarian for thirteen months (to the day ) and am trying to work towards being a vegan. Haven't managed it yet, manly through lack of will power and agro from my omni family.
i've been a vegetarian all my life. thanks to my parents. they were vegitarians when i was born and so since then i have stayed to be one i can't stand to eat the fleash of a poor animal. it makes me too sad.
I have been veggie for like 10 months and vegan for about 4 months now. I would have to give lots of credit to this forum for my conversions.
I have been vegan for 14 years and was vegetarian 5 years before that. I agree with you. I have been eating mostly organic for as long as I've been vegan. I am planning on putting some info about organic food on my site. Just need to find the time...
It will be 1 month since I finally stopped goofing around and playing with the idea... Yes, my one month will be in a few days! I've never been happier...except I could do without the ridicule...I know they'll get used to it...
hehe i just lost my vegan virginity 2 weeks ago. I was trying vegetarian for a few months.....but i wanted to drop it all... but i feel like my veganism is still too young to actually call myself that. :& but i'm never going back....so yeah...woohoo.
Well, I've been a vegan ever since I was born! My parents were both vegans - as were my grandparents - and I've been a vegan my whole life! I love it too! Once, when I was about 7 years old I tried meat because one of my "friends" was making fun of me for being a vegan and I wanted to act "cool" around her so I ate meat and I hated it. I cried afterwards because I knew I had eaten an animal and she didn't want to be my friend because I didn't eat meat, it was horrible for me. But now I'm grown up and I can't beleive I did something like that just to fit in or did that even though I didn't want to. I would never do anything like that today. But, yeah. For 18 years I've been a vegan.
That is so cool! I've heard of people being raised vegan before, but never about grandparents who are vegan too! We are raising our two children vegan right now. They are still young (3 and 5). So far it is going well. One tough thing are always the birthday parties. We bring stuff that she can eat, but it stays difficult a bit. Our daughter is very curious about non-vegan food. And at the end of the party, there is always the bag with non-vegan candy. Lollipops shaped like "hello kitty" and stuff. Could you please tell me how you and your family dealt with these kind of situations? Weren't you ever curious about the "hello kitty" lollipops and other candy? Did you and your parents ever decide to have you taste it?
Hi Jesi, I've been vegan for 1 year, and I ate vegetarian for 1 year before that. The three years before that I still ate fish here and there, so I was not a vegetarian, but I was moving in that direction. Chives
No, no. My parents never let me try or eat the non-vegan food or candy, even though I was very curious about it and wanted to try it. Whenever I went to birthday parties of my non-vegan friends my parents would always tell me before I went not to try any of their food or candy. They told me that if I really beleived in animal rights and out diet, then I shouldn't. They taught me the concept of wanting to do something even when you know it's not really good for you. They told me I shouldn't feel different just because of my diet. So, whenever I went to birthday parties my parents always gave my friend's parent - or whoever was the host of the party - a bag of vegan candies and fruits and put it in a little party bag like all of the other kids had, so I would think I was doing everything just like them. And it worked. I didn't care about what I had in my bag, just as long as I had a bag like everyone else. But when I did see that the kids had non-vegan lollipops and stuff I told myself that they were eating animals, and I knew I didn't want to do that, so I wasn't interested in trying the lollipops like everyone else had. Sorry if this is off topic. I'll get back on topic now. Yah - I've been vegan my whole life, for 18 years. My grandparents weren't really vegans their whole lives but stopped eating meat and animal products before they had my mom, so she was raised a vegan as well. Peace, Cayla
Thank you so much for your answer Cayla. I read it together with my daughter. For her it is so great to hear from someone else that was vegan since birth.
I been veggie since I was 12, before that I didn't eat much meat so it wasn't very difficult for me. I have also tried going vegan twice, maybe one day I will finally manage it
