Bree, The "costume requirements situation" I have found often changes from subculture to subculture.. actual practical considerations aside, it's really nice to run across people who are accepting and comfortable with wide variety of dress but this is, obviously, not always the case. I sense your respect for people and the variety of sub-cultures that you encounter; more power to you. It is very important that our world learn more about acceptance of, and respect for, differences in people and cultures. This is the most sophisticated position that person can have in encountering others, in part because it allows one to see deep and clear past prejudgement to the essence of what we are. Congrats on the job. Love and Blessing, David .
once again.. fer caretaking,, an bein comfy an cheap..mix an match dirt cheap.. http://www.aramark-uniform.com/widgets/hc_promo_0206/H143.jpg
Big poofy knitted sweaters with those little christmas tree/pumpkin ornaments that hang off of them.. and pants that go up to your bellybutton, big pearl clip on costume earrings, and t-shirts with Dale Jr. on them.
around here, http://www.lululemon.com/products/womens/bottoms/pants style pants have been pretty popular and one gal at my work wears a pair fairly regularly for work... especially http://www.lululemon.com/products/womens/bottoms/pants/judo_pant sort of a style. No, you don't have to buy this brand, but the style seems both comfy and decent looking
Bree, sounds like you have Okie "don't freak 'em out off the bat" down pat. all day proper shoes? Earth shoes, but don't even look until your first couple of checks. Dharma has all cotton scrubs. We've done some for nurses in the Bay and appearently they help ease psychotics! whoda thunk our dyes could do that? when the rayon arrives, inspect it carefully for snags and holes. I have a dress that is a bit tight and a couple years old and it's holding up fine. look for yoga tanks for bra options.
HHB, I scrubs were my first thought. But then they told me that it wasn't necessary to wear them, and after working there for a day I am now under the impression that scrubs would actually be kinda weird and maybe make the girl I'm caring for feel more uncomfortable. It's easier for her when her aides feel like a friend more than a nurse, so I'm gonna forego the scrubs (Dangit! No pajamas for work! LOL) Thanks tho, good idea otherwise. For those who suggested long flowy skirts, I WISH!!!! After my first day I can already see that those would be so impractical it's not even funny. WHAAAA! I was really hoping I could (talk about comfy) but unfortunately they would probably get caught up in her wheelchair and her lift and everything else. I do a lot of getting on and off a lift/ramp made of metal and there's levers and hooks everywhere... just a bad idea. I also have to do a lot of "climbing over stuff" which would ultimately completely miss the point of "modesty". LOL So far I think the knit shirts and pants are going to work ok. I just wish the pants I ordered would get here, I'm running out of pants already. Turns out one pair did NOT fit and the 2 others show my underwear to the whole world if I wear a knit shirt with them (usually wear baggy t's with them) so that leaves me with 2 wearable pants at the moment. Anyway, I think I'm set now. Thanks everyone so much for your help! And DM, I refuse to look at Earth shoes OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU RECCOMEND until I have a lot more money! I swear, you point me to stuff I can't resist.
Bree, Sounds like you're really sorted now, and I don't have any new suggestions anyway. Just wanted to say good luck with the job, and I'm sure the lady that's hiring you would be really touched that you'v gone through this much thought before you start working there!
i hate the fact that "jobs" need to be professional. Basic clothes can be "hippie" or "professional." I'm a social worker and I wear whatever I want. I keep it kind of professional though. I wear a plain pair of jeans or cortaroys(sp?) and a plain shirt. We can have dreads at my work, so I'm in the process of dreading my hair. Goodluck with the job!
