yeah, though not nearly as good as the old issues.... they have some neat ideas regularly, but the "old" version (70s and 80s) had a LOT of DIY stuff in it, the new one just reviews products.
But like Sandalscout, I prefer the older ones rather than the ones now...before they would include more instructions rather than just sharing product names....I prefer to buy others now instead....Hey we could keep a running list of good magazines that folks read and recommend!
I read Mother Earth News occassionally...it isn't nearly as good as the old issues I've seen from years ago. I think it's even declined over the last few years, since I started reading it.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. I could see it though. It's kinda like a leveled out MEN without of the gadetry and with a simplestic lifestyle connection. I got about 60-70 issues of MEN from the 70s and 80s a few months ago (Freecycle rocks) and they are the coolest.
yep. complete with that great cartoon on the back inside cover! same slightly insulting country boy voice the early issues had. Geez, I want to live in a cabin, not talk like a hick. Still, it's a good read, even if the male-female roles are sharply drawn (a woman writes an article on laundry, a man writes on fence repairs. I did more of the latter as a kid.
You're a big ass loser. The new issues are better than ever. Lots of info from chickens to farming to alternative energy.
We have all the earlier issues...Larry is 60 now and he has kept all of them through the mid 80's...took a break while MOTHER went a bit commercial. Now however they do have some better articles however I get a yuppie feel still. Especially when they have big articles on "green" cars.... The old MOTHERS had awesome articles...it's where I saw the idea of using rolled roofing for flooring (our porch now has a painted asphalt floor). Larry learned how to build a generator to power our solar batteries using a car alternator. We learned how to build a wood stove out of and old hot water heater. I love the old MOTHERS... I subscribed year before last as they sent me a discount...12.00 a whole year...but I have not renewed as my library carries them now. I read. BACK HOME....COUNTRYSIDE JOURNAL....and BACKWOODS HOME.
There's still a lot of really interesting articles and plans in there, enough to keep people inspired, i guess. But if you've ever seen the real oldschool magazines, there's no comparison, as far as layout, art and language. I use the website frequently, there's pretty good forums on there, alot of really knowlegable people. There's also an archive, you can read the first articles ever printed, all the way to the present. I was reading an article the other day called "digger bread, from haight-ashbury st. love". While you're waiting for the bread to rise, it advises that you take the opportunity to light a joint. Classic.
Yea, they've got a good thing going. Check'em out: http://www.backwoodshome.com/staff.html Peace, poor_old_dad
you can read all of there past issues...just check out the archive http://www.motherearthnews.com/mothers_library/
