i need to learn to play bass cuz me and my friends want to start a band and call it glockinvel i cant spell it but whatever
How do you expect any of us to teach you bass? I can play bass, but I don't know much about learning it. I learned guitar first, and I can play bass, but I wouldn't have a clue about starting out on bass.
Yeah. That is nice that guitar prepares you so well for bass. But then, bass is a guitar, but with four strings instead of six, and you don't need a pick. And I see you were banned, S/D/R&R. I yet live. Mwa.
S/D/R&R is DSK, he's probably gotten banned more then any other member here...im sure he's up in the thousands now as for playing bass...it would make it easier to learn to play guitar first, but if ya just have the bass, you should first learn the notes up and down the neck, learn some simple major and minor scales, listen to your favorite type of music and focus on the bass thats being played, and practice practice practice. the first time i played bass, i played it just like the guitar and i played just fine...but i dont play bass to often, so i dont know if learning would be so different
Yeah, I played guitar for a long time. I picked up a bass and couldn't play for shit. My guitar teacher gave me one lesson and I still couldnt play. Then I went home and kept practicing, and playing along with recordings, and now I'm really good. I teach guitar, but I have no idea how to teach bass...
I play bass,maybe I can help.You have to practice,practice,practice!Forget about the band for now,and do finger exercises and just get use to the instrument.And you have to really dig the instrument.If the love ain't there,don't even bother. On every string and fret do this...Lets say starting on 5th fret,E-string(thats the fat one). 1= pointer finger( index?) 2= middle finger 3=ring finger 4+pinky G- - - - -1-2-3-4 - - - - - - - - - - - You could even start from the G-String D- - - - -1-2-3-4 - - - - - - - - - - - G to E,E to G. A- - - - -1-2-3-4 - - - - - - - - - - - E- - - - -1-2-3-4 - - - - - - - - - - - Do this on every string and fret,everytime you practice,for a long time!Trust me it works.UP & DOWN,UP & DOWN etc...Even mixed it up a bit and leave out the ring finger,so then it's like...124,124,124,AND SO ON.... Hope this helps!
It's pretty damn easy to teach yourself to play bass. Hell, I taught myself to play bass and the guitar. Just don't be too adventurous, start off easy.
I disagree. While it's definitely good to work hard and get comfortable with your instrument, playing with others can help your playing improve a lot quicker than playing by yourself.
Yeah what everyone else said just look around online for some lessons and maybe get a book for bass. Chromatic exercises help alot (1234,4321,1324, etc.) also learn some scales.
Learning an instrument is a horrible place to be. You get lost in all the PLAY GUITAR LIKE HENDRIX IN 24 HOURS ads and beginner guitar books and the online lessons. I'll tell you what to do if you're serious about playing bass. Get a bass player to teach you. I learned guitar from a guy who'd been playing 40 years. And now I'm a good guitar player. If I'd stayed in the realm of practising chords from a book, I'd never have learned. When someone shows you, the notes are music. When you read from a book, the notes are just writing on a page. Plus they help you with all the little things. Like hows when playing guitar you don't leave you thumb hanging down below the neck. You put it around the back and above. Just an example of the kinds of things books don't tell you. So, if you really wanna play, get a teacher. It's WELL worth it.
Just a note to all you proud guitarists here: as a (fretless) bassist who learned guitar second, nothing annoys more than hearing someone playing a bass like a guitar. It sounds amateurish and ugly, IMO. The motions are completely different. One thing that makes a lot of difference in the sound between classic rock and the modern stuff is that back then the bass was still rooted deeply in jazz, whereas now it's mostly a bunch of guitarists bashing basses around.
I agree. I think I play an okay bassline, but I'm not a bass player. I do have a bit of trouble with complicated patterns because the strings are so thick. It's hard to hold them with your pinky
If they're like that, get a divorce and find a new guitar teacher. Just because someone shows you chords and teaches you how to play doesn't mean you can't have your own style...
