You may find some Panaeolus subbalteatus up there. It takes a bit of experience to ID them though. No psilocybe cubensis, sorry.

I haven't really searched for them yet. I've only been to one field so far, it's the one that always used to have them last year. They weren't there yet, so I need to go search in some more fields soon before it gets too hot for them. After the next good rain I'll be hunting.

You might find some Big Laughing Gym's or Gymnopilus spectabilis in northern va. Maybe Psilocybe caerulipes, no cubensis to mention, sorry.

You might get lucky with cubensis.

Find low-lying pastures with standing water on them. It should be soppin' wet.

yep, and check around treelines and fencelines too. You probably won't see them till you're right by them because they don't often grow taller than the surrounding grass. Look around you in about a 10 feet circle, not 20 yards off in the distance. They're in the Carolinas for sure. South Carolina has had an impressive season so far this year.

Maybe Arkansas- but the rest are too far north.

Most northern varieties grow on wood.

Does anybody know what species liberty caps are? Are they even a species or just a general term for psilocybin containing fungus? It seems that most pictures ive seen that are labeled as liberty caps look like p. cubenis.

From "Hallucenogenic and Posionus Mushrooms Field Guide', Pub 1977:

    Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Caps)

Habitat- near grass in pasture lands and meadows. Rarely on dung.

Range- No. Cal. to BC., spring to mid-winter.
    ----------
The pics look nothing like P. cubensis.

I don't know how outdated this info is, but Liberty Caps only became well known around the time the book was published, so google Psilocybe semilanceata, or better yet, look them up at the 'shroomery.
