If you choose to modify your body then you choose to accept that it limits your job options. It is not the same as religion, or sexual preference, or weight. It is a choice you made. That's the beauty of capitalism, you can make a choice, and businesses can decide that your choice goes against the image they want to portray, so you then find a business that doesn't feel that way.

Yes well I am sorry but the fact the nineyty percent of society looks like me,and did you know that 60 percent of america has at least one tattoo...so whats the point?I cannot wait for the day that big business decides that if they dont like tattoos and piercings, than too bad because half the population has them..

My mom used to brag about how smart I was and what a good kid I was. Now that I have my tongue pierced she thinks I'm a stupid whore. Nevermind the fact that I've never gotten into trouble in my life, and I got accepted to the University of Miami to study Pre-Med on full scholarship.....no no, Piercing = Stupid Trouble-maker

Yeah, lots of people can get nasty when it comes to tattoos and piercings, although tattoos (depending on what and where it is, of course - a big tattoo on your cheek will probably get some funny responses) seem to get less attention. I was visiting for dinner with my sister and my step-mom the other day, and my sister said she was thinking about a tongue ring - my mom was like "Oh, come on now, everyone knows you only get those to do sexual things."

Sure, I mean, it's an added benefit for a lot of people, and maybe even the reason for some, but why do people have to do that? Yeesh. We also talked about the idea of people not getting hired because of facial piercings, and my step-mom seemed to think it was alright.

My roommate, who's in the army, seems to think that I am somehow kind of "dirtier" because I have piercings (he's a really cool guy anyways, though). Kind of wierd. I guess it's all part of it, though.

Of course I've been judged, and I expected it when I got pierced and got tattoed. It's a part of it and will always be. Anyways, it's getting more socially acceptable and I don't really mind about it.

But if we're talking legally then it isn't the same. My company has every right to fire me for going out and getting a visible tattoo or doing something crazy with my body. That sucks ofcourse but it is technically within their right.

Luckily for me I work for an absolutely wonderful company. I deal with customers on a day to day basis but I manage to look smart and accessible to everyone despite having 8 piercings and dreadlocks. Nobody has ever mentioned anything harsh to me and all I've had is compliments from both customers ( even 80 year old millionaires!) to the Head of my company. I wish it were like that for everyone and I'm looking forward to the day that it is.

mostly I get the why do you do that its so stupid thing but i dont really get a lot of greif luckily i have a great job in tech support so we are all kinda odd and everyone here has peircings or tats or other weird oddities yet we still have a very strict dress code.... I dont agree with people firing you over tats and peircings unless you got o the extremes becasue at some point it will affect your customer relations which is the only reason most people have jobs.... I dress relitivilty normal but in high school i was as weird looking as i could be and yes i was deffiantly treated differently... but that was my choice people should not judge you on how you look but everyone dose judge people on looks we all do its a natual thing to be put off by people who are different

I catch so much crap!!!! "You're twenty and have five piercings and ten tattoos? WHat's wrong with you?!" sounds awfully familiar! I recently found out that my tat artist n piercer is willing to teach me to pierce and I was so happy that I told everyone I talked to! My younger sister is going to be my guinea pig for my first one, and maybe more. My mom's reaction was to threaten to tear piercings out of my sister's face and my nipple piercings out!!! WTF! My father said she handled it well compared to what he thought. GR! Not cool! Every time a family member hears I have a new tattoo or piercing, their first reaction is to look me up n down and ask "Is it somewhere I can see it?" *rolls eyes* Thus far, I haven't had issues with my tongue or nose being pierced and, so far, all of my tattoos are in hide-able places. I agree with two different comments that were made here already; One is that it's like discriminating against someone for having boob implants, and the other is that it is like religion, because no one makes you believe anything. I think self-expression should be protected more thoroughly in the law, so long as what it's protecting doesn't inflict those who don't choose to be inflicted. The media can hound anyone they want pretty much, and they have the right to say what they want in the papers, but we don't have the right to decorate our bodies the way we choose? B.S.!
