I'm planning on getting some piercings, so I figured I'd check out the Body Mod forum for an idea of what to expect. It seems that many of you are against piercings by gun and I was wondering why. I got my ears done that way and there wasn't a problem... Is it unhygenic or something?
the gun's can't really be cleaned properly and often is more of a dull pressure that forces the piercing, rather than a sharp needle. It can cause problems in healing properly. Oftentimes ears can deal with it fine, but I wouldn't get any other body part pierced with a gun, and even the ears are iffy if your body doesn't heal fast/well on its own
They can't? That makes sense I suppose. Although the gun they used on me got the job done fast and the earring they used had a sharpened tip.
in addition to what ihmurria said, they basically crush their way through tissue. and the jewelry guns use is very low grade and incredibly small. piercings are not a one size fits all. a "sharpened tip" will be no where close to the sharpness of a professional piercing needle. and its not just us or people in the piercing undustry that is against piercing. the medical community is strongly against them too. see: http://health.msn.com/general/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100050960 "No piercing gun. Don't receive a piercing from a piercing gun. These devices typically can't be autoclaved, which may increase your risk of infection. And such guns may crush your skin during the piercing, causing more injury." prozac bunny: oregon eh? if youre near eugene, definitely go to high priestess piercing. they are one of the best in the country. i've gotten pierced there before by gerog the owner, i will HIGHLY recommend them.

Wow... I can see why no one likes the guns now. Thank you for the helpful info! I'll be sure to keep that in mind, even if Eugene is a few hours away.

Yeah, guns tend to actually be more painful and much uglier than needles... Plus, maybe it's masochistic (but hell, we're all a little masochistic here) but I do like the feeling of the needle. ha, that sounded wierd.
