:sunglasse how awesome is ELP? Its sad that no one can remember them, ever time I bring them up to older people I always get "who is that?!" Brain Salad Surgey is good stuff...anything eles I should check out?
you've got really original taste ... never in rock history there's a band like ELP ... in fact i don't like them very much... but never in rock history a band was so popular and right now hated by actual rock critics ... The Emerson mellotron sound old right now(a lot of that time 2)...he use from my point of vue an strange bad trip sound in a few part of song ...i know what i tell... one of the 2 LP's i buy from ELP is Trilogy of 72 ...and i sold it a few weeks later But to be honnest there's a few correct song in it ... In Nice Emerson was not so bad and wrote occasional good song but sadly the evolution of technology don't diserve him... Surely if Emerson use in 72 keyboards from 68 or 69 (in my dreams)...i'm sure that this Trilogy album will sound better... At least the sleeve is attractive I buy too their 1st album and it's probably my best ELP even if it's not fantastic...i don't sold it and Brain Surgery yep i nearly forgot this one ...i've got to listen to it ...it has classical influence i read it somewhere...and was a massive succes if you like ELP there's band a little similar like the first band of Emerson , The Nice, with a less polished sound with classical music & underground and psyché Or the Moody Blues who with album like "To Our Children Children Children" (69) and "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" (71) with a important progressive side but not a organist who control the band like in ELP... Moody Blues are probably more democratic ... There's a lot of other good progressive band but this thread is not really made for long list of progressive good bands... 'bye
if you don't have tarkus than you must get it. deffinetly get the first king crimson album in the court of the crimson king as well, which has some really great lake moments.
yehaaa the 1st Crimson king is very good a classic... and i never understood why Lake leave the fantastic Crimson to form ELP ?!! Crimson lost in the way his popy side (ok not a lot) and the choice of Lake was artistically disastrous...but if he wanted to be a Moneymaker...he choose the right way... And Tarkus ...i know it's a classic ...but i just can't listen to it... it's not good enough... the problem it's not really the quality of the music but more a style that my ear can't support too long... but every 3-4 years i listen another time some records that i don't liked the 1st time... god only knows if my taste with evolve with ELP...
Yea Tarkus is my favorite song by them as well, kind of weird though and it get's old after too many listens quickly.
My opinion is that ELP is very painful to listen to. I don't care for music that is all flash and no depth. ELP prove that they can play their instruments at lightning speeds without missing a note, but that's about it. To me their music sounds dated and kind of cheesy. Tarkus would have made for great Atari music. The only album I kind of like by them is their debut.
pressed_rat, you know what you're talkin about. cheesy is a word best suited for this band!! wild for their day though, who else rides an organ? class!
RELAYER, I like your avatar! Check out this thread I just made: http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145526
Thanks man, I love that beer. I'm guessing you know good beer's too! Im gonna check it out right now.
I saw ELP in concert in the late 70's. Great laser light show for it's time. Missed out on the Moody Blues in concert.
yes i think the same exactly... some songs give me clearly headache ...and there's only 2 or 3 bands in history who can do me things like that... that old Atari sound in some of their songs... but i don't want to critisice them too much... 'cause at that time this sound was just different... to sound like an Atari in 73 was just fun & you were hipe ... it's always easier to criticise after 30 years ... But they're not the only one in this case... a lot of progressive records are in the same category now... Yes for exemple is painfull for me to listen But as i told before the main problem in ELP is not their songwriting ...their only problem is the sound of the Keyboard/Organ/or Mellotron... of Keith Emerson... If he play in Tarkus with a Mellotron of 68 and not this 71 fresh futuristic atari technology ...it will sound better ... Hear the Mellotron and Organ of Emerson in his previous band The Nice... it sound quite good... so it's not really a problem of note but he just don't had the flair for the choose of his instrument...
I Love the noize ELP produces! i'm way into it. everytime im in a new band with a different setup we sound a bit like them the first time around
i listened again Tarkus yesterday ...3 years after my first review... i change of advice ...it sounds dated but it still good... they're not in my fave bands ...but i respect them at least for their earlier albums... come on Emerson... smile... you're not that bad :H
bah. ELP aint very psychedelics... its more progresive then anything else, but of course it does get you in transe for its sheer beauty.
yes it's more progressive than psychedelic... but often a lot of psychedelic bands became progressive in just 2-3 years... between 69 and 71/72... there's a logic evolution in fact...
