My husband, who has held a green card since 1976, went home to Panama to visit his father, who had had a stroke, a few weeks ago. When he came back, he was detained by immigration for 6 hours, while he was questioned, fingerprinted, his record was pulled, and his green card and passport confiscated. Seems like the officer pulled up an old MJ charge (from 1984!) and a cocaine possesion from 1989.
he was told to report to the immigration office next month on the 4th, while they "determined his admissability" into the US.
My husband served 22 years in the US army for pete's sake!
He went to a lawyer, who told him under the new immigration laws, they actually could deport him for old convictions. This is how the Department of Homeland inSecurity is getting rid of all aliens. only problem was it targeted LEGAL immigrants. So, the lawyer wants 1,000 to appear at immigration with him, which is not even a sure thing cuz he could still very likely get deported. The lawyer also told him to go to the police deprtment and get his arrest records, which we spent 7 hours doing yesterday, only to be told he couldn't receiev them that day and had to come back on the 28th.
I said, "Damn! How many times you been arrested?" and he says, "I used ot get arrested every weekend for fighting or being drunk or high."

    Great:rolleyes:

So, by the 4th of April, I will most likely be a single mama again:(
I don't want to move to Panama! I'd have to learn Spanish for real, not just the few phrases I can get by with in Miami. I want to go to Jamaica.

    man, I'm so depressed.

WHY are they targeting LEGAL people??? That is so messed up, there aren't even words for that. Great idea, all the more reason to sneak in; they're just encouraging more people to get in there dishonestly, right? Sheesh.

From what I've read, if you provide medical care for an illegal or if you give them food or in any way help someone who is illegally in this country, you can be arrested. We have no rights in this country at all. Besides all the illegal wiretapping and serveilance. I'm sure everyone of us on this list is on a list somewhere of people to be watched. It's pathetic what this country has become.

Brighid, if he gets deported to Panama can he go to Jamaica? Maybe you can meet up there and still be together. I hope it all works out for you.

    Blessings,
    Kathi

I definitely say get on the wire and write everybody!! And since you are so well-loved here, please post the addresses so we can write them, too. This man should not be deported. But if he is, I'm curious, are you really thinking of not going with him? I guess I'm not on these boards much to know if you are married, or in a common law marriage state. Doesn't he have a right to trial by jury as a present green card holder? Anyway, I'm pretty pissed about the whole thing. I'm not much for hugs but I'll fight against thugs!

    Thanks for the support.

We could meet up in Jamaica, eventually. Honestly, we are not very happily married. He hates me being a midwife, and resents me leaving the house at all hours. There's been a lot of other issues, as well. We were planning a amicable seperation when I move back to Jamaica, we sleep in different rooms as it is.
However, it does piss me off to no end that he is having to go through this right now.
He's beginning to think he wants to go back to Panama, anyway. His dad is real sick, and is beggin him to come home to help take care of him and his businesses. He hadn't spoke to his father in over 20 years, and they made amends this last trip. Plus, I think he really missed his home and his culture, his sister's cooking;) , his country and speaking Spanish all the time. When he was there, he called me to tell me he would like to move back sometime in the future. Maybe this is just Destiny's way?
It's not looking good for him, anyway. There was a very famous case here recently, a Haitian guy who had been in the US since he was 3, served in the first Iraq war in the US Army, got his US citizenship, married an American woman, had 2 kids, his own business, etc. Went ith his wife and kids to Bermuda or Bahamas or something on vacation. Coming into immigration, he was detained, fingerprinted and questioned, and deported for a marijuana charge from when he was 19 years old. Back to Haiti, where he had never been since leaving as a baby. No family, barely speaking the language. That case took about 3 years, left his family bankrupt, and he still got deported.
This is the new world order, peeps. The Whitening of America.

Oh, that's another sad story :( I wonder what we can do to help change things like this?

Sorry you and hub are not very happy together, you're right maybe this is just the way things are meant to be. But he should still fight, even if he still plans on leaving, he could be fighting for all the other leagal immigrants.

Let us know if there's anything we can do.

Oh, Brighid. I wish you two could separate on your own terms, not on that facist's racists Bush's. :( :(

The Whitening of America is right! Those people want a past that never was. And families are being torn apart. Their talk of "Family Values" is all bullshit.

My prayers are for things to be the best for you and your family and that you can do what you need to do, on YOUR terms. Not the Facists.

    Love and Peace.

this is almost unbearable to read.
You hear all this stuff about how bad bush is, but you don't realize it until you see something like this happening before your eyes.
    He's like Hitler the Second.
I'm really sorry for all this Brighid.

Brighid, May I share your story with Juan Botero who is challenging Tom "let's bomb their Holy sites" Tancredo in the Colorado 6th congressional?
and also Bill Winter, the Dem candidate in the same race?
