stephen gammel is one of the creepiest artists ever...and he illustrates childrens' books! this picture and the accompanying story gave me nightmares for the longest time: not cool!!!
Some of those are pretty neat. Granted, nothing I would put up on the ceiling above my bed, but still... =)
Its sad to see those people Panik, that have good techniques but no clue about what to do with it. So they start using fears that are well known instead of finding new fears.
I dig it! Those black and white ones - they are from that book of scary stories that was so popular in elementary school - what was it called again?
that art is cool... i get a lot of weird looks from people in art class because my art is supposedly "creapy and fucked up" i think its just a matter of oppinion... the art above is a lot better than picaso or artists like that though... picaso art scares the shit out of me.
I find art of all types and styles interesting, I've seen Gammel's work previously, I think he worked on a series of "super scary stories" <-- something like that. And I remember that at the time those images were very creepy and frightening, but by this point I've seen many other images that aren't drawn to be creepy but they inspire fear in the psyche by bringing up fears that most people supressed during their youth. I'll see if I can find some and post links or images.
yep, he's the illustrator for that scary stories to tell in the dark series. those books are really frightening, kinda inappropriate for children I think! Skhippie I think he knew what he was doing with it...he was successful as an illustrator and I find his images very haunting. I love it. Finding new fears? Explain? JGroeling I know what you mean, for instance there was this picture I saw one time of a street in your average suburban neighborhood and these huge red cubes just kind of floating in the air lined up with the road. I wish I new how to find it...but it was sort of a visual representation of this recurring dream I had when I was younger, this feeling of boxes or something piling up and enormous weight and like...loud noise you could FEEL. And grinding and heaviness and being overpowered. When I saw the art years later it really affected me and I instantly made the connection between the two. Weird huh? And yeah while I love the blantantly dark and eerie, definitely appreciate unintentional "creepiness" more.
Exactly. The most intriguing images are those that make you recall your childhood fears although it wasn't their intention. I love when an artist captures a glance, look or scene from some random nightmare I had once. Because then you wonder wether its just coincidence or sometimes if the placement and use is correct you think it might be that they also had the same or similair nightmare. Art that makes you think is much more inticing to me
Ahhh those can still be the scariest thing ever if you just think about it lol. Its awesome though some of those kind of remind me of the wizard of oz tornado scene.
omg I remember those books! I absolutely loved reading those as a kid, but I never frightened easily... Anyway yeah I'm also a pretty big fan of disturbing art...I like anything that really hits a nerve, and I just embrace those moments when I come across a piece that's like "Ooo...fucked..." And gives me the shivers....that feeling is PRICELESS. *sigh*
I'm not sure, one of those scary stories to tell in the dark books but I'm not sure which one. It's the story where the spider lays eggs..IN HER DAMN FACE. ugggh.
i remeber looking at stephen gammell's drawings as a kid in that scary story book we use to have to have it at my elemtry school i read the thing soooo many times
