Ive looked it up. It's about respecting all forms of life. And you can get plenty of protien from fruuits.(if you eat the right kind.)

I met a guy wandering the jungle in Hawaii(big island)when I lived there, who was a practising fruitarian. He really looked exactly like the pictures you see of the people being released from the death camps in Germany.I'm sure someone more qualified than I,will be able to tell you exactly why you shouldn't do it.

There is great literature on the subject. Fruitatarians generally include seeds in their diet. In the 80s, Harvey and Marilyn Diamond wrote a book called FIT FOR LIFE in which the extolled the virtues of having raw fruit as the bulk (no pun intended) of one's diet.

I also uncovered this quote from the site listed below:

    Protein in Fruit
Fruits don’t have quite as much as veggies but there is a bit. Our seasonal fruit like nectarines, peaches, and plums all have protein though not a whole lot. Each of these fruits have about 1 gram each. Cantaloupe has 2 grams for 1/2 a melon and watermelon comes in with a whopping 3 grams for a 4 x 8 inch piece. The award for the most proteinous fruit goes to, our dear friend, the Avocado. One avocado has about 4 grams. Pass me the guacamole!

Y'know the first time I heard about this I laughed aloud... NOT because I thought it was silly, but because when I was a little girl I told my mom I was gonna grow up & eat nothing but fresh fruit. She laughed at me, and explained all about a balanced diet. I listened, but decided it was a "mom thing" and dreamt of eating nothing but fruit all day long.

Then I grew up & learned about the balanced diet myself, and lost my fruit dream. But it's back again! I'm learning everything I can about this right now. From what I understand so far, this diet is VERY easy to mess up & for you to become sick on... but if you're careful, it ought to be incredibly healty for you!!!
    love,
    mom

I've read alot about this diet and actualy tried it once.
IMO the diet is great, it increases your energy, you feel great, your mood improves, all around it is very healthy.
this diet isn't for everyone. I didn't last very long, only about 2 weeks... I love veggies and found it hard to not eat them...
but let me tell you that the little time i was on this diet I did feel great, but at first i was starving, but then i got used to it.

for anyone who is considering this diet i suggest you read read and read some more... don't just say OK i'm fruitarian and forget to eat balanced meals and make sure your getting all the nutrients you need...

if it's too dificult for you, consider the raw diet instead... it is great also... I try to keep up with this one.

I went fruitarian for like, two weeks too, lol. It was really hard....but I think it's something that you just have to be REALLY psyched to do...I wasn't, yet, in that state of mind. I still plan on doing it someday, but when I'm ready, and more informed.

Like Silent said though, I felt great.

The issue I have with both going raw, and fruitarian, is that I miss my comfort food. I would like to make the transition, going raw, and then, eventually fruitarian, but it's going to take a LOT of practice and getting used to, I think.

But, man, if you're psyched to go for it, then do so! I give you total props.... I wish I had the motivation to do it, at this point and time.

Is it based on the fact that by only eating the plants fruit that you don't harm the plant, whereas if you eat somethinglike a carrot the carrot dies?

    Talk about extreme veganism!

Yes, that is what it is based on.

It is pretty extreme, but I'd like to try it for a while [longer than a couple weeks] --I'd like to try a bit of everything in the vegan area of eating.

And, hey...it saves you of that ridiculous argument omnivores try to pull constantly "Oh, you care about animals, but what about the plants!"

    :p

I quite enjoy that argument actually, on the basis that it is so ridiculous!

Whilst I enjoy fruit a whole lot, I wouldnt be interested in the fruitarian diet mself. I just cant see the advantages of it.

Actually that would be erroneous because if you cut the tip of the carrot you can regrow it (much like poking the eyes from a potato).

Well lets just say that when someone goes to the store and buys a carrot, that carrot died because the farmer didn't cut the tip and regrow it. Maybe fruitarians are against that.... sort of like a vegan not buying beef or something.

so i was fooling around with numbers...and this is what i got a 3000 calorie a diet. This is probably twice what most fruitarians would actually eat and i intentionally picked the three most protein dense foods. Again, probably not what most fruitarians would eat. This is what i got:

    2 Avocados: 979c 93gFat 45gCarb 12gProt
    1 Watermelon(9 1/2 diameter) 1309c 18gFat 294gCarb 25gProt
    2 Winter Melons(5-1/4 diameter) 700c 2gFat 184gCarb 9gProt

    Total: 2988calories 113g fat(33%) 522g Carb(60%) 47g Protein(6%).

.8 gram of protein is the recommended daily allowance for a sedentary human being. So lets use me as an example...since the 3000 calories is what i consume in a day. I weigh 83 kilos, so i need to take in 67 grams prot. On this program i'm 20 grams short of that. Now, i'm eating atleast 1000 calories more than the standard diet and realistically probably 2x what a normal fruitarian would eat. Ontop of that, i dont qualify as sedentary so i should probably be consuming 1-1.4g protein/kilo.

Basically, i dont see how this is a healthy lifestyle for an average person. Maybe if you care absolutely nothing about competing in sports and dont mind being a sedentary person you could survive without any great health risks, but i think this is far from an ideal diet.
