What ever is easier, can someone give me some step-by-step instruction on how to make what ever one of those you think is easier for a beginner? I would just buy one but, I thought it would be cool to make something, and also on that site you have to order like 50, it's a wholesale site...

Oh, and do you think it's still ok for a guy to wear tie-dye stuff, because no one wears tie-dye in my town, I don't really care what people think. I didn't even think any one would think it's weird or any thing, but when I told my Mom I wanted to make one she was like "I don't even think guys wear those any more, I think just girls do" so I was just wondering if you think it's still ok for a guy to wear a tie-dye shirt?

That reminds me of the time my mother told me kilts were for girls, not guys...but kilts are made for guys so that just didnt make sense to me at the time. It does now though.

"okay" is not our word. we're hippies. we don't use words like "okay" that are used to show what is acceptable in society. we are our own people, unaffected by styles, or fashion trends. we wear what we want and fuck anyone who doesn't like it. they can wear what they want, you can wear what you want.

ask not "is it okay?", but rather "is it okay by me?".

dont be so crazy!! (whatdafuck? does that even make sense?)

of course a guy can wear tie dye. anyone can godammit. dont ever think that you cant.

try picking up a tie dye kit or something and you can get it just how you want.

i tried it when i was like 10 though, and it looked ok for a bit, but then it faded and just looked like a blue crappy mess. hmmmm....maybe i'll give it another go now that i'm (a little) older and (even less) wiser.

    :)

ok, regardless of if it is "okay" for guys to wear tie dye does'nt matter, this is how I make my shirts:

buy several whit t-shirts (like hanes undershirts that they sell in 3 packs for like $9) because you will have tons of dye left over and more shirts = more fun, you can even use left overs as gifts

buy rit dye (cheap dye that they sell in supermarkets near the cleaning and sewing stuff)in the colors that you want (rit dye fades horribly but it is cheap and easy to find and i love it anyway, if you find something better then use that)

aquire several rubber bands, a plastic bag for each shirt and a bucket for each color.

take the white shirts and twist them into several differnt sections (make a twisted section for one sleeve, another for the other, a few for the shirt (froun and back can be together or seporate)) and keeping them twistend with the rubber bands (which create a really cool effect if you add lots of them and get a stripy pattern)with this more chaos=better and more interesting shirts, try not to leave large portions untwisted

follow the directions on the box of dye which i beleve is adding the contents of the package to hot water and salt?(not sure about the salt) into the buckets

bring everything outside or cover the floor with newspaper because you WILL make a huge mess
dip the shirt into the colurs you want or pour them on useing a cup untill it is fully saturated (and try not to overlap colors like orange and green, red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple with eachother becuase the results are not pretty)

keep the shirts tied and twisted and put them in the plastic bags for at least 30 mins so the dye can sink in
you may want to leave a few shirts left over so you can see what you like and try to repeat them

after 30 mins take the rubber bands out and untwist you shirt and admire your work

dry your shirts on a clothsline or fence and enjoy

don't wash them with white clothing, the results will be not too splended for the white clothing

i do not know how to make the specific patters you were asking for, i find the arbitrary patterns far more fun and more personal, i'm sure there websights which can help you with that

    good luck!

    DO NOT USE RIT!!!!!!!

Rit, a hot water dye, does not allow the direct application required for patterns. It is also wasteful and where exactly are you going to dump the leftovers? Down the sink?
look for Procion (or aniline) dye.
Dharma trading company sells adequate for beginners kits. www.dharmatrading.com
So does Rupert, Gibbon and Spyder/ Jacquard.
    www.jacquardproducts.com

Dharma has good basic how-to and will design kits for groups.

I would also suggest practising patterns on mid-grade paper towels. Cheap ones are too thin and good ones suck too much dye.
all-cotton bandannas are good "tiles" and can make a great bed cover of experiments.

A for the gender-use of dyes. we sell more to males than females, counting the gift ratio.
Now, we do adress line and are seeking good masculine/unisex shirts beyond T-shirts.
