ill go one further and say the music seen of today is better than that of the 60s and 70s. The musicians are less drugged out and alot of bands sound so much tighter live than any of the bands from the 60s. With that being said all of todays good music is only possible because of the music made in the 60s. But I would say between the jamband scene, jazz-fusion bands, and some of the hip hop artists there is a wider talent pool than 30 or 40 years ago. For some good new music check out the artists playing at some of the festivals this summer (The wakarusa festival's lineup is sick). Some of my favorite musicians from today's times are sound tribe sector 9, the new deal, Bela flec and the flectones, Soulive, Nas, Umphreys, and the list goes on. I actually get mad when ppl say good music is dead cuz its just wrong.
it's alright there's more musicians... it make the music more banal and less magic... you hear music everywhere now ... magic is a bit gone... and for the drug and don't thing the same ... the drug can push or destroy ... it depends... allucinogen music is imaginative... well i've got no time to speak ...my time in this cybercafe is over bye
Thanks so much both of you! Although it may seem that most bands out there are terrible nowadays... it's due to a little something called "exposure". The thing is, there's plenty of fantastic music out there today... we're just not very exposed to it. 2 modern bands I really like areThe Coral & Apollo Sunshine. I recorded an album with my band in December and we got great distribution in Quebec. We're playing on independant radion stations across Quebec... Why not the majors? Well, because we're not Simple Plan. Indie artists such as myself aren't very talked about because there isn't much of a window unless you're backed by a major label and they're shedding heaps of money on promoting you. It's practically impossible for indie bands to get heard on major radio stations because they're not backed financially, nor 1000% guaranteed successful in their charts. It's extremely sad but what lightens everything up is the fact that that doesn't mean there isn't good music being made out there; it's just not thrown in our faces. We just have to look extra hard for it.
You're welcome! Has your band been aired on CHOM97.7? If so, then I guess that's one major radio station in my opinion.
there are still alot of awesome bands making good music, the indie sence is pretty big right now im not apart of it but i like 4 or 5 indie bands, many are rock based. what about white stripes, queens of the stoneage, primus, placebo, tomahawk. all realy good rock based bands that are still going strong, it you look hard enough you will find alot of good bands, also i have to say alot of the 70's music sucked in my opinon and is overrated, there was also a shitty music sences and shitty bands
I think there are some good bands around today like Bering Strait, Jason Mraz, Counting Crows, and so on, it's just that their not that mainstream, but there out there, it just hard to find them then it was a couple of decades ago. As for the old rockers, like the Boss, The Beatles, The Who, and Bob Dylan, their and many more old rockers cd's are still selling and some of their cd are selling more than Emo and R&B Cd, So I don't think that good Rock is dying; it's just harder to find.
To be truthful, their are hardly any good bands out there, if so that's a rare breed of a hand full, (probably less) The problem is, spite the big record companies having full control of what plays on air & no matter how many years your poor ass has been playing at the bars. You'll still need money to be famous, lots & lots of money! I mean look at the singers these days, most are college grads, or were in book club during their high school years. The kids in these pop/rap/rock/country/metal bands are either rich, nerds, upper middle class, or have some ties with record companies, (mommy, daddy works for one) It's all fucking fish sticks.
Indi bands are too obscure! No one seems to care about them! No, we need a band of people who are already well known, but who will play a new kind of rock! I know just the four people. All actors. All underrated, even hated. Try to guess which ones. I bet anything you'llnever come close!
As to answer the main question, no good rock isn't dying... it's been thoroughly capitalized on though, so the allure of money attracts a lot of uhh "poppy" guitarists. IMHO, you just gotta look into other genres. I think that when people like miles started doing jazz mixed with rock, or when sly started doing syncopated funk with psychedelic rock influence, it made a lot of talented musicians realize that new forms of music can be made by them just gotta be a little eclectic... so now today you have bands like string cheese, or umph's mcgee, who have successfully developed their own sound in a genre that's been done like mad. Although UM isn't really my style, I gotta give them respect for their own unique sound and pretty impressing musicianship. String cheese on the other hand, is my type of shit and rocks my socks... check out www.archive.org live music shitloads in case you didn't know already. or www.nugs.net for the headies.
Maybe there's a solution... it's not easy and it depends of how your sound really is... if you made The Coral style of music it will be very difficult to break (i liket the coral i had the 1st & 3rd of their 4 lp's) But if you've got some more straight 70's rock style in your music and record some 3 or 4 tracks in an album ...and use one of those songs as a single or be played in radio... I'm sure that 70's Free , mid-70's aerosmith , mid 70's Bad Company, or early 70's Rolling stones... etc...whatever... but play in the game of those stupid kids who listen to simple Plan... play rock better than them with more honnestly...and dangerousity than those plastic boys... you can put some folk and psychedelic influence in it... as in the early 70's... I done some demos with my bro in this way... but 4 u it all depends of your sound... if your band can't play as an early 70's rock band in some tracks...or if it's not your style... so it will be more difficult...
This thread has nothing to do with Jim Morrison. How do you know what Morrison was? Did you go to school or hang out with him? Who are you to disrespect him? I doubt you even know him. Everyone can be an asshole sometimes. Just look at your post! rock isn't dead...it's just evolving with the times people.
The philosophical answer might be that rock'n'roll is/was just American music, and that (like ragtime/jazz, blues, r&b before it), there'll always be American music, while this civilization exists. Or even that rap is the latest incarnation..rebellion music, music your parents don't want you to hear. Anyway, I'm no music 'expert', but I do have a lot of music (around 2200 LP's, and some seedies). I listen to loads of 60's and 70's music and I'm getting close to becoming an old fart. It's so easy to look at that era with rose-colored glasses, especially if you weren't really there. But I think the opportunities for new artists now are just mind boggling. Forget the b.s. on tv (Idol), but look at new media like Pandora, satellite radio, podcasting, downloadable music, an almost equal playing field as far as access to good recording equipment, etc. etc. Fuck, thirty years ago you'd have to get on your knees and suck someone's cock to get a record deal! Not now, the world is your audience. The club music scene has never been better. Hardly anyone wants to put on grandiose tours anymore...who needs the risk. Unless they're a guaranteed sellout like the Stones or U2 and don't mind charging their fans $120 a ticket. No, the only "problem" may be the general social paralysis. Or "the passivity" as Joan Baez called it. Good art comes from pain and feeling right? Btw, even some of the old guys have been writing some of their best stuff in their twilight days.... Dylan, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Solomon Burke, Kate Bush, XTC etc.
of course not.....the GREAT BANDS are few and far in between. Thats the way it has always been and the way it will always be. Even the record companies know this. Record companies will sign say 10 bands, 9 fail and 1 pays for the losses on the other 9. Thats the way this industry has worked (atleast since the 60's...prior to that it was all about the hit single rather than the album). Furthermore, if you list the best bands in rock you will see just how much TIME there careers span. Its easy to say Floyd, Hendrix, and zep are legends because it has been 20-40 years since they released there hits and they are still hits. If any of the crap released today holds up that long, it to will be legendary rock n roll. Just remember that rock n roll is in a constant state of flux like everything else in this world. Modern rock is a part of what rock n roll is, no matter how much more you like classic rock.
