    Hello,

How far do people keep there lights from the plants? Everywhere I read it says the closer the lights the better, around 12 inches if you have a mover or the lights are air-cooled. So, how come whenever I see pictures of huge impressive Dutch scenes the lights always seem to be around 4 feet away?

Suppose that would depend on what light you were using ?

I am using a 1000w HPS, I am pretty sure thats what those big scenes are using too.

Most use 600's as they give out more lumens per watt then anyother sized hps out there.

so if they use 600's, you would think they would be closer. it just seems weird, nearly every photo of a big scene in Cervantes new book shows the lights so far away from the plants. i am just curious why experts have the lights like that?

What if they pulled the light away from the plant for the pics? I am wierd I use one 1000 that I keep pretty far away from plants than, i also use a couple of 6's and'4 that usually are about 2-4 ft away.whatever the plant seems to like.If you pay close attention to your ladies they will show you what they like....there is deffanently no mistakeing a healthy plant...

I keep 600's at 18" -24" depending on the plants response as Pro stated.I have never been closer then 18".

keep a fan blowing air between the canopy and the light.
about six inches from the tops sounds right.
remember the closer the light, the tighter the buds!

The only reason to move the lamp away from the plants is if it's too hot.
The further the source is from the target, the less light will reach it.
Light is only constant in a vaccuum. In the real world, there is a thing called impedence.

The effective lighting distance for a 400W HID is only about 18 inches.
In other words, if you have a 400W light hanging 18 inches from your plant, it is only getting 1/2 the lumens AT THE VERY TOP. If your plant is also 18 inches tall, then the bottom is only getting 1/4 the lumens.

I expect that in the growshow photo's where the lights were hanging so high, they were moved so they wouldn't affect the pictures, like THEPRO said.

I use a 1000 watt H.P.S. and it is kept about 12-18 inches above the canopy. There are two fans, one real close to the bulb blowing on it directly, the other is farther away, but aimed at the bulb as well. No problem with the plants burning. Also the buds are 5 weeks into the grow, and they are about the same size around as a soup can!
