Hello, I am a new grower..well sort of. I grew about 10 plants last year until they were about 2-3 feet tall. I had a couple of cheap shop lights over them. well this year ive got money to spend on a good light. My question is, should I (for only 6 plants) use a 400 watt light or what is some suggestions. I want a light that will save energy, or just plain not skyrocket my energy bill like ive heard it will do. Any advice would be awesome!

Match the light wattage to the sq/ft of the growspace.

    With HPS, that's 50 watts per sq/ft.

Would this light save on electric? I heard your bill can skyrocket a couple hundred dollars. With a light like this can i expect a 50$ increase in the electric bill, or more like $150?

Uhh.... $50-$150? Maybe if you're running a grow op to supply a small town? At least, per month. 400 watts will increase your bill $10-$16 a month. And 400 watts is ok for 6 plants. If you think you'd ever grow more, go with 600 or 1000 watts.

AN hps 400 watt lamp will burn 8000 watts or 8 kilowatts per 20 hour day
    400w x 20hrs =8000 watts or 8 kilowatt hours (kwh)
Most utilitys figure your bill on kwh used. If I look at my bill and see they're charging me 10 cents per kwh that works out to 80 cents per day or maybe 24 bucks per month.
figure things from your electric bill

400 watts is nothing to worry about
besides, its only on twelve hours during flowering.
dont veg to much, keep them short.
400 watt light can only penetrate the canapy no more than 12 inchs.
your good for a 4x4 space, keep them short and pack them in!
