I recently got high with a friend who had never smoked before. She enjoyed it and smoked several times after that. About a month later, we smoked a bowl and she started coughing violently. She told me that she started to cough up blood. She also said that she was going to take a little break from smoking pot.

I have been smoking for 6-7 years and have never had anythign like this happen to me, nor have I heard of it happening to anyone else. Is it possible that this occured because of smoking pot? Do some people have weaker lungs (she does not have asthma)? Is this just a huge coincidence that she got sick after smoking the bowl?

    Any insight would be helpful...

if this happens to someone should they not smoke anymore? Is that the body's way of saying that it can't handle it, or is it just a weird reaction with no long-term meaning...

It's happened to me before, sorta. For like 2 years, I smoked just weed. I never once coughed up blood. I started smoking cigs and about a year or so after, this started happening sporadically. When I start to get sick, I cough up bloody mucus from time to time. It's only happened to me a few times, but I know a half a dozen other people who have had the same thing.
I don't know if it's possible, but maybe there's a cut on the inside of the throat, and coughing aggitates it to bleed?

She should DEFINITELY see a doctor about this. It's entirely possible that it's no huge deal, and she just needs to lay off the smoking for awhile.. But more often than not, coughing up blood is a sign that medical attention is necessary.

If your constantly coughing up blood, I think you should worry. As I said in my post before, I know a number of people who have coughed up blood, as have I.
Whenever I cough up blood, it's like a one time deal. I'll be a little sick and I'll take a big hit and cough my lungs off (you know, that sickly cough you get when you smoke that just doesn't stop) then I'll spit out a huge lougue with a little bit of blood in it, then that's it for a few months, no more blood. If it's more then just an isolated incident, I wouldn't worry about it to much. If your worried though, have them call the doctors office and tell them you were smoking (don't have to specify what, but it's good to be honest with a doctor) and coughed up however much blood however many times. They may want to make an appointment, but I really doubt it.

like others have said, it's most likely not blood from the lungs, but blood from the throat or mouth. it could be a lung infection though; see if it goes away after a few days, but if it gets worse, she should probably see a doctor.

yea if your constantly coughing up blood, its common sense to goto the doctor. but if only happened once then I wouldn't worry about it. Except if you start pissin blood... then I'd go right away :)
