Is there a religion/philosophy that basically goes along with the things that hippies believe? Things such as..peace, no violence, love everything/everyone, nature freaks, but yet still has nothing wrong with drugs in moderation and sexual intimacy? I don't know a lot about different religions so I was wondering if you guys could help me.
yeah there is a religion, and that religion is your religion if you believe those things. you can be christian, muslim, athiest, if you believe in love, peace etc, i personally believe these ideals can fit into most relgions, if not taken too literally live your philosophy peace, love and sunflowers x
ya i guess it would be more of a faith than a religion. Hm...cause I'm not sure I believe in anybody connecting us to God such as Muhammed or Jesus..but I defintely believe that there is a God and that he created everything.
I recently told a builder who paid me pretty well id do no more work for him cause he claims to be a jesus freak from the hippie days and now claims to be an apostile or however you spell it. He claims to be directly under god (thats what an apostile is),claims to be like 5 levels above your average preacher, says since hes an apostile the church should support him and hed not have to work(claims it says this in the bible), profisized? the 911 attacks.....but no one would listen. Kept asking me and my workers if he started a church would we come....sure im gonna tell the man who signs my check hes a fucking whack job....not Ive nothing againt realistic religious hippies as long as they are not like the one I just described above. Twice sayed hed fire me if I didnt pray with his group every morning, 22.50 a hour inst worth dick from a nutcase who dont even know shit about building and takes on crazy jobs and lets the people he hires figure them out.
that's cool, do just call it faith, call it what you feel comfortable with. i also believe in God, and do not believe Jesus was the sole son of God, i believe we are all children of God but also incorporate God, compilcated to explain. good luck on your journey x
i think alot of people search for something n then when they cant find it,,, they say they are atheist,,,, i myself as a youngun couldnt figger it out so decided i was atheist when that isnt it,,,, i just didnt have a deity type thing i looked up too but knew it all somehow got here,,,, ..hell even now cant say exactly what i believe is the real deal.... n its not to belief in something i am searching for which is basically what religion does is give you a deity.... its the philosophies etc behing it all that interests me...
Read "electric Kool-Aide acid test" by Tom wolfe... I think that sums up what the hippies were about... group consciousness, one consciousness, unity, peace, love... along with a certain style of dress, living, behavior, use of substances and so on... From the haight ashbury, and the counter-culture, the hippie types have evolved into so many kinds, that it is much different then how it started really.
Religion is about theology and dogma. Stick to spirituality and just plain ol' "ideas" and you'll be good. Anyways, those ideals fit most religions in a pure form (since when has anyone seen a religion in a pure, uncorrupted form, though?). Hippie spirituality is more of a mystical way. And mystics of all religions are alike, basically, because they're cutting through the bullshit to find the One Truth. It's about consciousness, not idle belief. It's about experience, not knowledge. Seems like a subtle shift, but it makes all the difference.
What is with all this talks about faith and beliefs? faith is alright, beliefs can keep people going... beliefs based on mystical experience are even more powerful... and yet... It all points to something that is possible. Mystical Knowledge Knowledge of the one conciousness beyond time/space and in all time/space, called "god "shiva" "allah" "buddha nature" and on and on... The point is it is real... much more real... then this dream people call the 'real world' So come on dude, and... "The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, 'Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid ever, because this is just a ride ...' And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, 'Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real.' It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter, because – it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace." - Bill Hicks Come on, let out a WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Right here, right now!
The closest any religion comes to the "Hippie Way", is Buddhism because the book Siddhartha by Herman Hesse inspired many of the original hippies back in Germany after the turn of the century. Many of those came to the US & UK and turned people on to the book which quickly became a best seller in the US. The book, based on the life of the Buddha, stressed how we need to reject the material world and look within to find our true nature. Hippies took this advice to heart and followed many of the precepts. And of course hippies in the 60s had a much wider array of pharmacopia to help with our inner search for answers.
"spiritual" or "mystical" christianity would also be close, wouldn't it? You know, taking to heart Jesus' message of peace and living communally as he did. Some differences for sure, but still, it has some similarity.
Trippin thanks for "pretending" you don't know sometimes, you are so humble, you light you... SHINE ON!
