so i saw the libertine. im a really big johnny depp fan, but this movie was just a disappointment. 80% of teh movie seemed unnessesary and i was really suprised johnny would take a role like that. i liked the whole message and storyline, which i think is where johnny depp gave in, but it was very untasteful. what did you guys think?
hi dietcoketree. Am interested in your thread. I was going to go and see the movie, as it seemed something rather different and imaginative. But you've put me off now. Probably a good thing. I've enjoyed watching Depp in Benny and June, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas etc. I think he's an extraordinary actor with a lot of depth. Sorry to hear this latest one was a bit of a damp squid
yea i hate to say it as well... i mean, hes photo is hanging multiple times on my wall but this film was just too much. usually i admire the fact he takes roled that nobody else really does, but this one, i just dont know!
I've only seen the trailer of the movie yet, and I must admit I was very interested in watching it, but after reading these comments I must you've really put me off. What exactly was so bad about it?
well the commercials made it sound like this awesome action movie that had the hottest guy alive at the center of it. but it wasnt. the first scene has him feeling up his wife, whom he later cheats on. the uneccesary sex scenes and comments continue till about the end scene. no joke- about 15-17 people WALKED OUT of the theater and left. i only stayed as long as i did becasue my foot fell asleep. :/
This thread is great. Helped me save 5 quid at the movies, and I fell about at the crack about people walking out and your 'foot falling asleep', dietcoketree. Excellent. Libertine's cameo appearances are great too
the first ten minutes of the film were tough for me because of the way they talked, but after that it was pretty cool....lol my freind thought it was sopposed to be an action movie,
We saw The Libertine on Sunday. For someone who is familar with the Restoration of 1660 King Charles and the various Popish plots and The Exclusion Crisis the movie was good! Depp is good as always. Malkovitch gave a good portrayl of The Merry Monarch. Charles II has many illigitimate children, but none with his Spouse, Catherine of Braganza, Portugal. In the movie Deep/ Rochester is heard to comment on the failure of Portugese endavor "save for navigation" The succession fell to his Brother James who reigned only 3 years before being overthrown in a putch known as The Bloodless Revolution. William and Mary took over. Reaction to the desolute lifestyles portrayed gave rise to Victorian morals. It was during the reign of Charles II that Nieu Amsterdam became New York. Pennsylvania, New Jersey. The Malabar and Hudsons Bay were aquired as well. Parliment had little confidence on Charles and provided only limited money. The movie showed Charles scheming to win funds from Parliment and also from his first cousin, Louis XIV of France. The overthrow of his Brother James Stuart in 1688 launched warfare with Louis XIV of France that lasted untill 1714.
Sounds to me like your a young girl with a crush on Depp, and you were so upset seeing Depp in sex scenes with women other than yourself, that you couldn't enjoy the movie. Maybe it is a bad movie, but it doesn't sound like you are giving it an objective review. Maybe you should just rent Pirates of the Carribean again.
lol i think i might... no but honestly i appriciated the story, it just seemed unnessesary to put such emphasis on the literal act of him being obsessed with sex. ive seen other movies with him involved in intimate love scenes, so please dont see my dislike for the movie as immaturity.
If you knew anything about Rochester then you'd know them emphasis on sex was totally appropriate and necessary. I enjoyed the movie for the most part, depsite the fact all the way through it I keep hearing over and over in my head a line from an old Frantics sketch. " The C.N Tower - you know..a wang so big even Rochester would get off on it "
