my new machine came with xp (it's pretty but there's lots of things about it that are really crap, like it won't let some of my old dos shareware have the resources that it needs to run, and there's crap on there i haven't figgured out how to get rid of yet too, well there's a whole litany besides that, but it runs, lets me get on here, and doesn't crash nearly as often as 95 did). my old one still runs 95, which i've had to reinstall on it several times. once i get all the files i'm interested in salvaged from it, i might try some flavour of linux if i can get one free that will run anything. i'm saying if for two reasons, one i'm too broke to buy anything, the other is that i have no linux/unix experience at all. (and figure it's long over due that i get some)

yes its free, but no it won't run anything.

you can argue that it can DO anything, since virtually every PC app has a linux equivalent, but no you can't just run your windows apps in linux unless you emulate.

well yes, more or less obviously, one family of os isn't going to run anything written for another, but i do know a lot of engineering apps have unix ports or were built on unix then ported over to windows. what i don't know is how reliably any particular flavour of linex will run which unix apps. nor even anything about which flavours of linex are which, how many there are, their relative merrits or anything else.

i only know everyone i know who is serious about tecnonerding runs some version of linex and programs in some flavour of c.

    How should I vote?

    I use all of them.

But I like a Mac to have fun, and a Unix to work with.
