Our culture here in America is heading backward. And it's not homosexuals, abortion, or hippies who are to blame either.

The media has saturated us with commercials, films and TV shows (especially talkshows and "reality" shows) which GLORIFY things that fly in the face of the philosophy of peace and love.

Seeing a naked woman on the screen doesn't bother me. Seeing some "playa" with his "hos" wallowing in money does. We are going backwards. Back to GLORIFYING MONEY, DEGRADING what WOMEN have worked their asses off to achieve, and fueling a society of hateful kids who talk more about "bling bling", clothes, and video games than PEACE, EQUALITY, LOVE, and JUSTICE.

We are bringing up a society which SUPPORTS, CONDONES and ENCOURAGES Elitism.

You have to LOOK, THINK and ACT a certain way to be accepted. You have to go "be cool" by CONFORMING. This is the direct OPPOSITE of what we all have been trying to fight for!

I can't believe that such shows as "American Idol" where some guy insults and completely rapes the emotions of young people--instead of just being straightforward and polite as possible about it--are SO popular.

It seems that our humor has now been downgraded to hostile humor only. Sarcasm is passe. Now, the more hurtful the funnier.

Elitism has smacked us all in the face. With BUSH and the Conservatives doing whatever the fuck they want and the media kissing their asses and promoting elitism and hate.

    It makes me sick.

    Funny.

    Truth doesn't necessitate insults, however.

    Hate and elitism does that.

Apparently not or everyone would be accepted for who they are. Mediocrity wouldn't care that much.

But, I am not for mediocrity. I am equality. Equal freedom. Equal justice. Equal peace.

Not because you don't look, speak, act and think a certain way--you suck. That's fucking childish.

The juvenile dumbed-down society we live in actually is regression from the 60s as far as the level of philosophical wander and cosmic intelligence.

The generation of Bob Dylan, Ginzy and Leary became the "Hey yo! Lemme fuk up mah spellin and treet gurls like hos and beetches...yo..."

We aren't becoming a society of elitists, we have become a society of people who don't think. Consumerism and media mindlessness are really just tools used to dumb society down, so, if anything, it's being used to make people complacent slaves of the government. If you can keep the public fat, dumb and happy though a steady diet of junk food, junk education, junk media, junk entertainment, and consumerism, you can keep the majority of people confined to a level of mindlessness beneficial to the government's agenda, that requires people not to think or ask real questions.

The mindlessness of the American people reflects the mass mind control and manipulation that people are under. Americans haven't always been as stupid as they are now, it's been a gradual process instilled through conditioning, through many different outlets.

It hardly seems worse now than say, 20 years ago. i don't see this as any type of new development.

Anyone else remember the 80's..yuppies, preps, glory age of fraternities etc.

In some ways we are better off, in the US the streets were twice as violent back then, crack trade was booming, drive bys were common.

i guess I think you are wrong really.

But, I am not just speaking of today, seamonster. I believe this has been going on. I'm just saying that at some point--it began to regress. Whether that be the 70s or 80s or whatever.

It's regressing and getting worse in the long run.

Sure we cleaned up the streets a little (a very little), but how did we handle the problems of drug abuse?? THE HUMAN ZOO. That's real progress, eh?

Since when was it a person's basic right not to get made fun of?

    No one said that.

Poking fun at people is cool if it is done in a cool way, obviously. My friends and I make fun of each other all the time, but this goes deeper than a little fun.

We are speaking of the degradation of women in our culture and the falling away of respect for each other. Those other things are mere examples of the hostility-favoring society we've dissolved into.

Society has the right to endorse whatever it chooses - just because you don't want to buy into doesn't mean other people cannot.

Buy into degrading women? You're goddamn right I don't buy into it.

I guess you support society's "right" to choose slavery back in the earlier centuries too, huh?

I don't "buy into" that either.

All this shit flies in the face of what the original hippies were fighting for in the first place, pal.

As an outside observer, young black subculture seems to be leaning fully toward the hiphop deal. The majority of black people I know idolize rappers. They aren't necessarily misogynistic, but value money and material possessions. But so does every other subculture in america. The only difference here is that it is portrayed in a much more upfront way and its still relatively new.

Are women any less protected under law by this? Does showing this infringe on any individuals rights? No. Does restricting what can be shown on TV? Absolutely.

Poor attempt to put words into my mouth, douchebag, but good try. You'd have been better off guessing that I have confidence in freedom of speech while at the same time in people's ability to not have their views dictated to them by the idiot box.

    Neither do I, jackass.

Like I give two shits - I can think for myself.

Unlike you, I don't have to resort to such childish behavior as name-calling to get my hand in the jar here.

Secondly, your "think for yourself" comment has nothing to do with the philosophy of what the original hippies were fighting for. Peace, Love, Equality not in your think tank?

wow, i see society as being too politically correct where you can't badmouth anyone without being called a racist/sexist/bigot...

i think you could be my polar opposite, libertine.

edit: no offense, but i'd really hate to let you get in control of tv/films...imagine how boring it would be watching shows about peace. There is only so many times you can watch a group of people playing "ring around the roses" before it just gets boring.

    LOL....maybe, Megara, maybe. :)

Why would you want to bad mouth people in the first place?

Nah...just shows about adventure, sex and drugs. ;)

    ;) Good film.

And besides, I didn't say there should be no violence in films. I just don't see hostility as something to glorify.

What's next? A shrine to Adolf Hitler?

I mean the media doesn't have a problem with "ho", but making videos or shows glorifying child molestation or racism or serial killing ain't gonna fly nowadays and for good reason. Neither should the degradation of women.
