Do you think society's fascination with "thin" could be directly tied to a rise in obesity?

Perhaps the rise in obesity could be linked to the high sugar, high calorie, low nutrient diets of the average American? Meanwhile, girls with eating disorders are on the cover of Seventeen and Cosmo. I think society is sending a mixed message saying to eat what all the fatty foods that you want but you can't get fat! It's similar to: smoke all the cigarettes you want, but don't get lung cancer. It's fucked up.

    Peace & love

It very well could be, a long with the rise in television/film...a sort of disconnect from reality.

I highly doubt that you are Buddhist. My definition of pride is of Buddhist origin. I don't expect you to have the same defintion as I do.

Personal growth is important as well. Improving our looks is not as important as improving ourselves to help others.

when i was a skinny little 7 year old i thought i was fat because when i sat in a chair my thigh muscles spread out. of course, my father was on my mom's 80 pound ass all the time because her thighs were big (she was a runner). if she gained so much as a pound, he'd notice and tell her she was eating too much. this thing is not new by any measure. just as you get older you become more aware of it in other people, children, even. that's not to say that it isn't getting worse, just that kids have been killing each other's spirits over looks since the first time they were gathered in a group.

Megara and hippy chick 666, you are way off topic. Please drop it, or take it to PMs.

    Thank you.

it toally coes from their mothers or family in most cases. I can't remember anyone in my family ever having a positive comment about their looks-ever. They tried to give me positive self-esteem and compliment me but when you watch people trash themselves int he mirror everyday it becomes a learned bahavior.
I'm sure for a lot of kids it's peers or the media too. Funny I was reading for human sexuality and it said that most fashion models have a genetic defect that gives them less estrogen, more testosterone and a lot of them actually have enlarged clitorisis to the point where their gender was ambiguous at birth...odd.

that was on House. undescended testicals, she was a hermaphrodite and therefore immune to testosterone somehow because of this and therefore showed exaggerated feminine features....House's words were "the perfect female is in fact a male..."

Except being fat is fairly unhealthy.

Kids shouldn't be judged by their appearance.

Well, no one should really. Not the way we do it.

Remember it wasn't long ago that if you had black skin or long hair you were cast out. I agree the obesity problem is a health issue, but the "ugly" thing is in the eye of the beholder.

The fucking media has destroyed "loving oneself" for "loving an image of what society thinks you should be".

emotional health and spiritual awareness is more important to me that physical health. i'd rather have a "fat and ugly" friend than some emotional black hole whose entire life revolves around their appearance and acceptance by others. keep up the good work smurfing-nibbles. you're one step ahead of the rest of the rat race.
