Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite environmental movies? I am involved with an environmental club at my highschool, and in an attempt to raise environmental awareness among the student population we are going to put on a film festival. We plan on showcaseing some informative, but intresting, movies adressing some of the envirnmental issues of today. I have already done some looking, and have found a few good movies so far, but im in need of a few more. Also, if the movie is not commonly availiable, could you please tell me where i could find it... thanks
I would go with some beautiful movies like Rivers and Tides, Baraka, Winged Migration, Koyaanisqatsi (and the qatsi trilogy).
I would highly suggest Baraka or maybe Koyaanisqatsi... But the rest of the qatsi trilogy I would say dosen't focus enough on nature...especially Noqasaquati (or however you spell it) which is #3.......almost nothing to do with nature....especially if you havn' seen the previous two. And awesome job being in a high school enviormental group- keep on going with it! Even when you get dis-hearted...It is still worth it.
Rivers and Tides was amazing. That is, if I remember correctly. That was about that artist, right? Very cool. The day after Tomorrow was good in some ways, but so exaggerated as to make a mockery of what it was talking about. Frost chasing them down a hallway? come on... A couple of very cool films you might like are "Microcosmos" and "Genesis" both of which are absolutely amazing. Genesis seems to have a more "environmentalist" ethic to it but of course, they both focus on the beauty in nature so both would work for you. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0287457/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117040/ (odd, that says Genesis is in French with subtitles in English, but the one I saw was spoken in English).
look into national geographic, discovery channel type specials, animal planet stuff, or similair. you might be amzed the stuff you might even find along the way.
LINK TV is the best channel it is a non corporate, non -profit organization new station that has a lot of shows about environmental stuff. Also world music and news. The best channel on tV IMO check it out at www.linktv.org also You should watch "Silent Running" it is a 1972 counter-culture scifi staring Bruce Dern...about a renegade botnist with the last species of plant life in the galaxy, he is a good guy and the government is trying to destroy them... check it out!
yea man LINK TV is awesome...i stubbled across it one day and I'm glued to that channel whenever I go to my mom's...I don't have cable at my house. haha
"Go Further" is a great one about organic living and limiting your impact on the environment, though you might not get it played in your school since there are some references to pot and some language. A really good movie you could get is "The Future of Farming" by Deborah Koontz Garcia. "Baraka" is a great one too, but that was already said! But if you want to have the most impact, don't rely on movies, get them away from the TV and take everyone on a nature walk around your campus, you'll be amazed at how much life can be hiding in plain sight! Unless of course, you live in the inner city, in which case, you can't really do that. How many rats and roaches do you need to see?
The Coconut Revolution. My friend got it off a russian site a while ago when you could still download it, lately i havent been able to find it though, sorry. Its a documentary about a town on an island in papua new guinea called Bougainville and their struggle against the papua new guinean government/army over the right of a polluting mine to the land on their island. so it's environmental/social justice, but eventually they manage to resist the papua new guinean army's embargo mainly by using coco nuts for fuel to run their cars and generate their own electricity. amazing movie
btw i forgot to say what an awsome idea yours is film festival sounds like a really great way to educate people, films are bound to grab people's attention and usually provoke a more personal and memorable reaction than lectures or the like... props to you
Without a doubt, Baraka, though your average person wouldnt be able to sit through that, despite it's beauty. All I can think of is a movie called 'The Future of Food', a documentary about genetically engineered crops and the problems with them. I really reccomend watching it for yourself and sharing it with others, as it really does help raise awareness. The Future of Food: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427276/ Check it out!
i think that baraka as a film is in a league of its own. the narrative is almost purely visual despite the music. i find in baraka multiple worlds and possibilities and multiple realities whilst all of them are being played out on the same planet.
I am trying to get SAVE THE PLANET into an environmental movie. SAVE THE PLANET http://jimcolyer.com/@tracks/20/lofi.mp3 We're floating on a grain of sand in the vastness of space If future generations are going to inherit this place We've got to Save The Planet Do something while there's still time Save The Planet This earth is yours and mine The tropical rainforest is disappearing more everyday We'll never replace it, we'd better not burn it away Save The Planet The wonders of nature are free Save The Planet Have you ever planted a tree? If the skies are blue And the oceans too Isn't this a better home for me and you? If the air is clean And the land is green Wouldn't you like to be part of this lovely scene? solo I'm thinking of the animals that once roamed the African plain Their numbers have dwindled, pretty soon none will remain Save The Planet Do something while there's still time Save The Planet This earth is yours and mine Save The Planet The wonders of nature are free Save The Planet Have you ever planted a tree? Save The Planet Save The Planet Save The Planet Save The Planet Save The Planet, Save The Planet Save The Planet, Save The Planet Save The Planet, Save The Planet Save The Planet, Save The Planet Save The Planet Save The Planet Jim Colyer ASCAP
Spirit Bear: The Simon Jackson story. http://www.spiritbearyouth.org/themovies.php?page_id=32 Not sure whether this movie is available outside of Canada, but it's based on a true story. It's pretty well filmed also, for a "Made for TV, Canadian, movie". Ed Begley Jr and Graham Greene are in it.
