Hiya, I am looking to start dreadlocks. My hair is about 5-6 inches long. I'm looking for someone in the Buffalo, NY area to help me out, preferably somebody who has some experience backcombing, which is how I want them to be started. I'd be willing to drive within about 50 mile radius or so and would definately make it worth your time and effort. It's hard to find people who have any experience where I live. Mostly just black women in the city here who are more familar with the twists. Hmm, maybe certain salons would do this for me if I brought backcombing instructions to them??(And prolly charge a ton)...Anybody know about this? Well, if you could help me out, or would consider it you can respond here or email me at phreestar22@yahoo.com Later, Zack
check out Terripin Station for some dread heads, they may help ya. and new age creations in the mall(s) some of the chics have dreads. all i've heard about it, is you shouldn't use wax . .
good advice. thanks. i started backcombing one, it seems kinda loose...but i found turning them while backcombing helps a lot. just seems hard to get it tight at the roots right now (maybe i'm not doing it right...hmm). good suggestions tho you guys, i'll let you know what happens and post some pics when they grow in and whatnot. i used to have 'em, just trying to do them differently this time around (w/ out wax). it seems wax just slows down the growth. i have very curly/wavy hair so the process usually goes somewhat fast anyways. still open to offers, but, i think i may check those locations you mentioned marbchic or maybe just go ahead and do it myself. ok...
If you want someone to start them for you, you can do what I did. Look in your phone book and start dialing. Look for places that have the word "braid" or "locks" in them first. Ask for pricing. I got mine started for $50 but some places are outrageous and charge $75 just for upkeep! Ask "do you work with dreadlocks?". Also, state specifically what type of hair you have. Many people who know how to do dreads only know how to start them on black hair. Ask if they work with African American /Caucasian/ Asian/ whatever you have hair. If you can do it yourself, then great. Personally, I could not and did not want to mess up. You can also go to the salon to have them maintained. I would not suggest getting a dread perm. Do it how you want it. Starting it at a salon is not cheating, it is making sure you are off to a good start. Weaving dreads into your hair is cheating. They will take work whether you start them or not. Good luck and have fun!
